Why Can’t Meghan Markle Enjoy Being a Newlywed Without Baby Speculation?

Tags:

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby speculation before the woman leaves the carriage! Yes, I know that’s not how the classic rhyme goes, but considering the immediate speculation over when Meghan Markle will have children, you could’ve fooled me.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding happened on May 19, and people certainly wasted no time asking nosy questions such as “When is Meghan Markle having babies?” and “Is Meghan Markle pregnant already?” As of right now, Meghan has given no clear indication that she is expecting yet or trying for a baby anytime soon — and quite frankly, this is all getting a little out of hand.

Don’t believe me? Take a look back at some of the most-watched TV reports on the day of the wedding. I guarantee that you’ll see more than one reporter discussing future children for the newly wedded couple. (The very newly wedded couple, if you ask me.)

It was impossible to ignore: The media was basically waxing poetic about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s potential mini-mes while the couple were still riding around in their carriage. They had barely left the church before the topic came up. Good grief — can’t Meghan have a slice of her wedding cake before she gets asked when she’ll be eating for two?

Of course, I realize that once someone makes the decision to marry a British royal, they’re pretty much signing up to become an extremely public person. Although Meghan was already famous in her own right as an actress on Suits, she was a relatively private star prior to getting hitched to Prince Harry. These days, she’s quickly becoming one of the world’s most recognizable women. I understand, therefore, that she had to know on some level what she was getting into when she said “I do.”

As expected, there were the play-by-play descriptions of everything from Meghan’s wedding dress to the decorations at the ceremony. There were the inevitable comparisons between her wedding and the one of Prince William and Kate Middleton. And there were the bittersweet musings about what Princess Diana (forever in our hearts) would have thought of the whole thing.

That’s a whole lot for one bride to prepare for on her wedding day, especially considering she had some seriously complicated family drama to deal with at the same time. Was it really necessary for people to start adding baby speculation to the mix immediately? I don’t think so.

You’re only a newlywed for so long, and all couples — even famous couples — deserve to soak up and enjoy every minute of it that they can. There will be plenty of time for baby speculation as the days go on. But perhaps it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to wait until they have their honeymoon, or maybe even until the next time they’re spotted being extra sweet with Prince George or Princess Charlotte.

In the meantime, can’t we just let a carriage ride be a carriage ride?
