5 Clever Ways to Double Your Kitchen Storage

Tags:

“My kitchen has way too much storage”… is something you’re unlikely to ever hear. People bemoaning a lack of cabinet space, on the other hand, is much more common. When you’re planning a kitchen, it’s best to incorporate as much storage as possible. It will future-proof your home and be a selling point when you come to move on.

Whether you’re renovating, building from scratch, or simply looking to make your existing kitchen storage more efficient, architect Andrew Benn gives his design ideas for doubling the standard space issue.

Cabinets Up to the Ceiling

This is one way you can practically double your storage in one go. Cabinets that stop half-way collect dust and grease and if space is tight, you’ll be tempted to stack stuff up there anyway, spoiling the clean lines of a new kitchen. If you have cupboards built all the way to the top, you can use the highest shelves for partyware and those appliances you don’t use as often as you thought you might.

Deep Drawers

Using drawers rather than conventional cabinet doors for your countertop storage is a more effective use of space as the drawer easily allows you to use the full depth of the storage rather than reaching in up to your armpits to find something. And deep drawers with sturdy sliding mechanisms allow you to store quite heavy items such as pots and pans in a way that’s more accessible and much easier to organize.

Butler’s Pantry

If you want extra room for preparation, storage and cleaning up, consider a “kitchen within a kitchen.” Yes, it’s a luxury, but the fact that more people than ever are entertaining at home means the butler’s pantry is back on the agenda. In terms of storage, it’s a no-brainer because they can house the small appliances and other things you’d otherwise have cluttering up your countertops.

Kitchen Island

Don’t miss on this chance to add in extra storage. Open shelving means you can add personality with colorful cookbooks and accessories. Drawers and cupboards are a better option for neat freaks or those with small children, and you can add custom designed features such as pull-out shelving or a wine rack. If the kitchen island is fixed, there’s also the option to secure floating shelves above it.

Clever Systems

If there’s a storage issue in your cabinets, chances are someone’s designed something to overcome it. Pull out racks, turntables, corner drawers, hanging rails, and door fixings — there’s a whole world of ideas waiting in stores and online. So do your research and find out what works best for you.
