Costco Is Selling Keto-Friendly Avocados That Last Three Times Longer Than Usual

Tags:

When it comes to keto diet must-haves, nothing tops the list quite like the versatile avocado. The low-carb fruit is not only rich in nutrients, vitamins, and healthy fats, it’s also absolutely delicious when paired with just about anything else on the keto meal plan for weight loss — if you eat one during its very limited freshness window, that is.

Yes, the notoriously quick-to-spoil produce can be a real pain to buy and use without creating some sort of hour-by-hour avo-calendar to track its freshness. But fear not, Costco’s here to help: The supermarket giant that brought us $5 spaghetti squash in bulk is now stocking select locations in the Midwest with special avocados that last two to three times longer than the average fruit we’re used to (which means you won’t have to rush home to prepare guacamole before your batch goes bad). The fresher keto-friendly fruits are courtesy of a California startup called Apeel that’s been backed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, among other big-name investors.

According to Apeel’s website, avocados supplied by Del Rey Avocado and Eco Farms are either dipped or sprayed in a substance made of plant-derived materials such as peels, seeds, and pulp. The lipids and glycerolipids in this mixture keep moisture inside the produce and halt the oxidation process, which boosts the avocado’s ability to protect itself from the environmental stressors that shrivel the fruit and cause its creamy green color to darken.

“Avocados with Apeel have double the ripe time, which means better quality and more time for you and your family to enjoy them — so less good food goes to waste,” the company said in a press release. “And since avocados with Apeel maintain delicious quality and ripeness for much longer, without requiring the use of refrigeration or any preservatives, grocery stores can begin offering top-quality avocados in more locations across the U.S.”

Besides select Costcos, the longer-lasting avocados are also now available at Midwestern supermarket chain Harps Food Stores before a planned nationwide rollout. Fortune reports that Apeel is currently working on citrus and asparagus with longer shelf lives as well, but honestly, we’re just happy to finally have an avocado we can enjoy without any rush.
