Why You Should Be Cleaning Your Windows With Coffee Filters

Tags:

There’s nothing quite as satisfying as looking out into your backyard through streak-free windows, but getting the glass sparkly clean is an entirely different story. We all think we know how to clean windows — spritz the cleaner and go to town with the paper towels, right? — but it turns out cleaning windows with coffee filters is a better method for preventing streak marks on glass.

Why does cleaning windows with coffee filters work so well? These slips of disposable paper are not only essential for making a tasty and good-for-you cup of joe, but they’re also lint-free so they won’t gunk up your windows. Plus, they don’t break apart in your hand after awhile because they’re specifically formulated to withstand prolonged contact with water. And finally, we should mention that coffee filters are dirt cheap compared to rolls of paper towels. If you think about it, is there any better paper towel alternative?

Using coffee filters to clean windows is simple: Spray a glass surface with cleaner and wipe away the liquid with a coffee filter. We recommend using multiple filters to increase absorption, as well as buying extra-large filters (which were intended for use in restaurants), as these will cover more surface area.

If the filters still aren’t doing a good job at sucking up all the moisture, divide the cleaning process into two parts: First, spray the glass and wipe it down with a normal paper towel. Then, go back in with a filter to polish and buff away any lingering lint or streaks.

Another option for cleaning windows would be to use old newspapers. Grab the funnies (once you’re done reading them, of course) and wipe away the cleaner. Glass won’t absorb ink, but you still need to be careful around the edges, as ink can jump onto the window sill and the surrouding walls if you’re not careful. You may also want to pop on a pair of gloves first so the ink doesn’t transfer to your hands.

Now, sit back, relax, and enjoy your crystal-clear windows. The leaves are just starting to change colors, so you’re in for a fall treat!
