7 Steps to a Romantic Valentine’s Day at Home

Tags:

Though we’ve heard that some people believe Valentine’s Day is nothing but a Hallmark holiday, we’ll take any excuse to show our loved ones how adored they are. (Also champagne. We’ll take any excuse to drink top-shelf French bubbles.)

Even if you are a little cynical about Valentine’s, there’s no denying that a thoughtful, intimate dinner at home is a beautiful way to show your partner how much you care for them. Sure, fireworks, private yachts, and trips to the Maldives are great (we wouldn’t say no), but the best way to celebrate the one you love is by spending time, not money. Here are our top tips for a loved-up Valentine’s Day dinner at home.

1. Hire a babysitter.

It’ll make everyone’s night better. (Even better is if the kids can have a sleepover somewhere.)

2. Go simple but luxe.

You’re not going out, so spend on extravagant foods you wouldn’t normally purchase for dinner at home. Super fresh oysters, fancy chocolate, figs, and, of course, top-shelf champagne.

3. Style your space simply but elegantly.

You don’t have to go all out, but it is nice to make an effort with your styling. Throw on a crisp white tablecloth, dim the lights, light some candles, and put a bouquet of fresh greenery or flowers on the table. Simple and stunning.

4. Add some personal touches.

You could write a list of 10 things you love about your partner, or a note about the first time you knew you’d fallen in love with them. Talk about your top three favorite moments you’ve spent with them since last Valentine’s over dinner.

Make a playlist of songs that remind you of your love (if you’re married, your wedding playlist is a good place to start) and play it throughout dinner.

5. Relax and order in.

Listen, there’s no shame in ordering in on Valentine’s Day. In fact, there’s something kind of romantic about it! See if your favorite restaurant delivers or simply dial in a pie from your preferred pizzeria. All you need to do is make sure the drinks are ready to go!

6. Head for the stars.

Set up a projector outdoors if it’s warm enough and watch a movie as you picnic under the stars. BYO cheese platter, strawberries and yes, champagne! For dessert, whip up some heart-shaped sweets.
