Why Passing Out Thank-You Cards Is the Best Way to Show Gratitude This Thanksgiving

Chances are you make your kids write thank-you cards for Christmas and their birthdays — but what about thank-you cards for Thanksgiving? If your brood doesn’t already send out thank-you notes for Turkey Day, you’ll want to make this a family tradition ASAP.

True to the spirit of the season, writing Thanksgiving thank-you cards is a simple activity that’s all about expressing gratitude. There aren’t any set rules regarding what has to go in the card, so it’s totally up to you to make each note unique. Writing to your favorite people about shared memories you cherish, the reasons they inspire you, and your goals for your future together are all great places to start. In fact, you may have trouble fitting everything you want to say in one card.

“Our son [sent] out a picture and note to five people he loves. He included what he wished for them, what he loves most about them, and why they make him happy,” mom Sarah Muoio wrote of her experience

Of course, you and your kids don’t have to limit yourselves to five notes — or even just immediate family and friends. A small thank-you card for your doctor, the mailman, or your favorite librarian is a sweet way to recognize all the hard work these people do the other 11 months of the year. Being on the receiving end of a surprise thank-you card can instantly brighten someone’s day.

As parents, it’s heartwarming to see your kids remember all the wonderful things people do for them — and to get excited about saying thank you in return. Plus, writing thank-you cards for Thanksgiving reinforces the idea that expressing appreciation is the right thing to do when someone goes out of their way to do something for you or buys you a gift. That said, don’t forget the importance of retaining that gratitude throughout the rest of the year!
