Why sharpening blender blades is important
You know that having sharp blender blades will ensure your food is processed to your liking, but it’s also important because it helps prolong the life of your appliance and it can help keep the machine from being so noisy.
How to tell if blender blades need sharpening
A simple way to tell if your blender blades need sharpening is if you start to notice that the food you are putting in the blender isn’t coming out as smooth liquidy as it was before. Another way to tell is if when using the blender, it’s much louder than usual.
How to sharpen blender blades: 3 easy methods
Once you’ve determined that your blender blades are in need of some sharpening, try one (or all) of these methods to get them extra sharp.
1. How to sharpen blender blades: Use eggshells
Before sharpening your blades, make yourself an omelet and put the eggshells aside, Then, simply put the eggshells in your blender, fill it up about ⅓ of the way with water and run your machine as normal until they’re completely broken up. Once you’re done, dispose of your eggshell paste in the trash or in your composting bin to avoid ruining your sink drain. Wash your blender thoroughly with soap and water, and then dry it. Why it works? The hard, rough shells sharpen the blades as they blend.

2. How to sharpen blender blades: Use uncooked rice
Another kitchen staple that can help sharpen your blender blades? Uncooked rice! “Just take about 1 Tbs. of uncooked rice and pour it into your blender,” recommends Mary Findley, author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Green Cleaning. “Then, blend the rice until it’s all gone. The tiny rice particles ricochet around the blades, causing friction that sharpen them!”
3. How to sharpen blender blades: Use aluminum foil
The third and final way to sharpen your blender blades is with aluminum foil balls. To try this method, tear off a few sheets of aluminum foil, make a few small balls, place them in the blender, and turn it on for 10-15 seconds. The soft metal in the aluminum foil is abrasive enough to sharpen the blades without damaging them.

How to keep your blender blades sharp
A large part of keeping your blender blades is making sure there is no leftover food residing in the blades — and to do that, you need to keep them clean. Melissa Maker of CleanMySpace.com recommends simply just filling the blender with warm and soapy water before giving it a whir.
“The spinning soapy water will wash off the sides, as well as the pesky, hard-to-clean blade, in 30 seconds flat,” promises Maker. “And if for some reason the soapy water isn’t doing the trick, try blending a mix of rice and saltwater—this combo helps scrub off any stubborn, stuck-on bits.”
