How to Use Hydrogen Peroxide for Dishes With Stuck-On Food and Grime
If you’re like me, you hate doing the dishes. I often dream about the day I will have a dishwasher and never have to do the tedious chore by hand again. But even when you have a dishwasher, sometimes there’s some dishes that need to be washed by hand and some food residue that just won’t seem to come off. Having struggled with this recently myself, I went in search of a hack that could help. To my surprise, there’s on household staple that can tackle stuck-on dish grime — hydrogen peroxide.
How to Use Hydrogen Peroxide for Dishes
Whether you’ve overcooked a casserole or baked salmon on a tray, you’re probably familiar with how tough it can be to get stuck food off your dishes. Sometimes soaking them in soapy water helps, other times you really need stand there and scrub away. However, the experts over at The Kitchn say using hydrogen peroxide can solve this problem.
When you combine hydrogen peroxide with dish soap, it can work like magic on your dishes. “When you add peroxide to dish soap, it breaks down into oxygen and water,” Bailey Carson, head of cleaning at Handy told The Kitchn. “The soapy water then traps that oxygen, creating bubbles, making your dish soap extra foamy.”
When you’re using peroxide and dish soap together, Carson says there are some rules to follow. Be sure you’re using a hydrogen peroxide that’s somewhere between three to six percent dilution. Mix two parts hydrogen peroxide with one part dish soap until it’s foamy. For food that’s really stuck, you can apply the solution onto your dish and let it presoak before washing. Otherwise, simply use your sponge and solution to gently scrub away the grime.
You can also add the hydrogen peroxide to your dish washer to clean off that grime! Before starting the dishwasher, just add two ounces of peroxide to your regular detergent. With this hack, you’ll have clean, sparkling dishes in no time!
