Naomi Judd Leaves Fans in Tears After Heartbreaking Confession
In a shockingly candid interview, Naomi Judd bravely revealed heartbreaking details about the depression she’s been struggling with for the past six years. The 70-year-old country music performer–mom of actress Ashley Judd and country singer Wynona Judd–called the situation “completely debilitating and life-threatening” and admitted to several stints in psychiatric wards.
“I would come home and not leave the house for three weeks and not get outta my pajamas, not practice normal hygiene,” she told ABC News’ Robin Roberts. “It was really bad.”
The singer’s face appeared swollen during the interview and her hands shook, which she explained are a result of medication to treat her depression.
“I don’t look like I usually look. My face; I feel like a balloon,” said Judd, who delves into more details about her ongoing battle with depression, anxiety, and panic attacks in a new memoir, River of Time: My Descent into Depression and How I Emerged with Hope.
Judd, who skyrocketed to country music fame as The Judds (along with daughter Wynona) in the 1990s, says some of her issues stem from the trauma of being molested by a member of her family at the age of 3 1/2 years old.
“I think that’s one of the reasons I wanted to write the book…because I never acknowledged all the bad stuff that people did to me,” she told ABC. “I had to realize that, in a way, I had to parent myself.”

After hitting what she called “rock bottom” after The Judds stopped touring in 2010, the singer retreated from the spotlight and spent years battling cropping bouts of sadness and even stints in psychiatric hospitals. But with hard work, her outlook is finally changing, and Judd wants to give hope to others in her position.
“I have processed and worked so hard for these last four years,” said Judd. “If I live through this, I want someone to be able to see that they can survive.”
