62-Year-Old Mom of Two Is Pregnant Again–20 Years After Starting Menopause
After menopause most women are content, if maybe a little sad, knowing they don’t have to deal with painful period cramps or long, difficult childbirths anymore. But not Lina Alvarez.
Despite going through menopause at 42, the 62-year-old Spanish doctor is pregnant again.
Alvarez already has two sons: a 10-year-old and a 27-year-old with special needs. But she knew she wanted another baby. Only most doctors said no.
“Some years ago I met a gynecologist who agreed to help me if the tests were OK and they were positive so he planted an embryo.”
The chance of success was low: only 6 percent. But Alvarez is now eight-months pregnant with a little girl she has already named. The girl, she says, is growing normally, and she currently weighs 4.4 pounds.
So what motivated her to have another child?
Due to a doctor’s error, Alvarez’s oldest son’s head was damaged resulting in his current condition. It also ended her marriage. Alvarez is his primary caregiver and must attend to him at all times.
“For years I cried every day because I could not face my son’s disease. He had to be in hospital twice a week,” she said.
But her pregnancy has lifted her spirits.
“I am happy because I am living now my reward for so much suffering. It is a miracle.”
