Soaking in a Warm Ginger Bath Could Help Relieve Cold Symptoms — Here’s How

When we think of using ginger to help us feel better, it’s usually in the form of an aromatic tea. The potent root has been relied on for thousands of years, but most of us have apparently only barely managed to scratch the surface of its special abilities.

Studies have confirmed just how beneficial ginger can be for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Research published in 2013 boasted its ability to inhibit the development of cancer cells and improve symptoms of cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and gastrointestinal health. Another study from 2014 found the topical use of ginger was helpful in treating arthritis conditions — which leads us to wonder what other perks we might be able to unlock outside of the traditional method of ingesting ginger.

According to a new trend, we should be soaking in a warm bath filled with the powdered form of the root instead of just sipping it as ginger tea when we’re feeling under the weather. The idea behind it is that ginger’s natural warming properties will amp up your already toasty bath and help you sweat out more of the pesky toxins making you feel run down whenever a cold or flu strike.

Erin Motz, a yogi writing for MindBodyGreen, shared her experience with the popular detox bath. She was skeptical it would really do much good, but admitted that it did indeed help her symptoms subside. Motz added Epsom salt, baking soda, and essential oils to her bath and claimed the combination helped eliminate toxins from her liver, kidneys, and thyroid.

She’s not the only one singing the praises of these baths, either. Blogger Jillee from OneGoodThing wrote about mixing Epsom salt and essential oils with her ginger powder, adding bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar as well. Both ladies recommend staying in the bath for about 30 minutes to get the best results. 

If you’re feeling icky symptoms starting to creep up and have some powdered ginger on hand, try sprinkling it into a bath with your own favorite products to see if you can enjoy the same seemingly magical results. After all, we all want to get back on our feet as soon as possible when colds knock us down.
