The Secret to Reversing–and Preventing–Alzheimer’s May Have Been In This Medication All Along
One of the side effects of growing older is an aging brain–one prone to memory lapses and an inability to learn new things as quickly as before. And for the millions of people with Alzheimer’s and dementia, that side effect turns into tragedy as the disease robs them of their humanity–and their souls. So it’s always good news to hear about potential breakthroughs.
This week, researchers at Rockefeller University discovered that a medication already in use to treat another neurological condition could potentially reverse Alzheimer’s–and even prevent the normal cognitive decline seen in many older people. The drug, called riluzole, actually changed neurotransmitters in the brain to make them work more efficiently. Researchers studied the effects of riluzole in rats first, but they are now conducting clinical trials on Alzheimer’s patients.
The plus side of this drug is that it has already been approved for use by the FDA, which means there are no known side effects. So with any luck, this Alzheimer’s breakthrough may prove to be the cure we are all looking for.
