There’s no doubt that star Julia Roberts always seems to defy the laws of time with her voluminous hair, radiant smile, and ever-flawless skin. But how exactly does People‘s “Most Beautiful Woman” achieve such ageless beauty?
We did a little digging, and here’s what we discovered.

She eats carbs.
Shocking, we know. In a 2012 interview with The Independent, Roberts revealed she can’t stick to carb-free diets for the simple reason that she loves bread too much.
While Roberts does indulge in her favorite carbs, she still tries to maintain a balanced diet. According to her nutritionist Carrie Wiatt, Roberts has healthy eating habits: For breakfast, she eats homemade granola, seasonal berries, a carrot and banana muffin, and fresh papaya with yogurt. For lunch, she’ll eat baked artichoke polenta or spinach filo pie with a wheat pilaf; dinner is often ginger-crusted salmon with quinoa and Chinese veggies, or sea bass with black bean salsa and asparagus. Sounds like something we can get on board with!
Roberts is also a huge fan of avocados, which she tries to incorporate into both breakfast and dinner. Then, for dessert, she’ll have a cookie. Turns out, you don’t have to nix the sweets to be healthy!
She encourages her entire family to eat well.
When the Oscar-winning actress isn’t on set filming her next blockbuster hit, she loves being a stay-at-home mom to her three kids Phinnaeus, Hazel, and Henry.
The actress admitted she emphasizes to her kids the importance of making healthy food choices.
“We definitely try to eat mindfully,” she told InStyle magazine. “As I always say to my kids, ‘You have to eat the good stuff to get the good stuff.'”
We love that philosophy!
She exercises four times a week.
In addition to keeping a healthy diet, Roberts maintains her slim physique through consistent exercise. She enjoys activities like yoga, plyometrics (aka jump training), pilates, and aquatic workouts, she told E! Online.
Still, Roberts admitted she’s not the exercise junkie you might think her to be.
“I don’t love exercise, but I do love how I feel afterwards,” Roberts told The Independent. “Accomplishment, clarity, energy, strength, joy…These are all things I give myself through working out, and I can feel it in everything I do.”
She brushes her teeth with baking soda.
No wonder she has such a luminous smile! And apparently, it’s a trick that runs in the family.
“[My grandfather] would put a big heaping mound of it on his toothbrush, ” she told InStyle in 2012. “He had only one cavity in his entire life.”
She keeps her beauty regimen simple.
With such a demanding schedule, it’s not hard to understand why Roberts maintains a minimalistic beauty routine.
“On a regular day, I’ll just brush my teeth, wash my face, and apply sunblock,” she told Viva, a New Zealand-based lifestyle website. “I’m a busy mom, and sometimes I just sunblock my kids and run outside and get my nose burned. So I’ve made a stronger effort to take care of myself.”
In order to do this, Vogue Italia reported she now uses extra-virgin olive oil to rejuvenate her skin and achieve a glowing complexion. It definitely seems to be working!
She accepts that she’s going to age.
Although it can be hard to come to terms with the fact that we’re continually getting older (with a few wrinkles to show for it), sometimes the best solution is to just embrace it.
When the 49 year-old actress was recently asked how she has aged so naturally and gracefully, she had the best response: “I’m trying to have some peace with the aging process,” Roberts told Viva. “I’m just realizing that it’s going to happen whether I like it or not.”
