Appalled Shopper Calls Out Fashion ‘Disgrace,’ and It Has Women Everywhere Applauding

Like anyone who’s experienced dressing room drama knows, clothing sizes can be tricky–and even downright infuriating. Deena Shoemaker of Wichita, KS is more than familiar with the problem: As a leader and counselor for teens and pre-teens, she’s worked with young girls who worry about body image and suffer self esteem issues because of the size on their jeans.

And she’s getting totally fed up.

In a recent Facebook post, Shoemaker shared a collage of photos of herself wearing an array of shorts and pants in very different sizes. The kicker? They ALL fit–and the side-by-side pictures clearly indicate how totally off-the-mark fashion sizing can be.

Indeed, if she can wear pants from her own closet in sizes 5, 6, 8, and 12–and they all fit perfectly–then something is clearly wrong.

“I’ve listened to countless girls tell me about their new diets and weight loss fads. I’ve have girls sob in my arms and ask me, ‘If I were skinnier, would he have stayed?'” wrote Shoemaker.

Her rant against the fashion industry continued.

“You Photoshop models and actresses and slap them on the front of beauty magazine,” wrote Sheomaker, who said she tries to tell her girls that magazine photos are not realistic at all. “But when you resize a girl’s pants from a 9 to a 16 and label it ‘plus size,’ how am I supposed to fight that? Photo manipulation is one thing, but how do you expect me to convince her that the number printed inside her clothes is a lie too? How do you expect me to convince her that she doesn’t need to skip dinner for the next month because her pant size didn’t actually go up by seven digits?”

Her message has been shared more than 73,000 times since she posted it, and it’s her final point that has plenty of people cheering.

“The size printed inside your clothes is subjective to the fashion industry’s personal taste, and it fluctuates rapidly,” she wrote. “Your size doesn’t determine your beauty; your life does.”

Amen to that!
