Gwen Stefani Is Not a Natural Blonde, But Here’s How She Avoids Dark Roots

Tags:

UPDATE (6/14) — Yes, it’s true that Gwen Stefani’s routine of dyeing her hair every week isn’t cost-effective for most women out there. But the good news is that the pop star spends way less money when it comes to more crucial aspects of her hair care. And by “crucial,” we mean conditioner.

According to her hairstylist Danilo Dixon, Gwen Stefani spends just $5 on her conditioner. Yes, really.

It’s the Moisture Leave In Creme from Pantene, and apparently, it’s the wallet-friendly way that Gwen Stefani’s hair color stays healthy, even with the repetitive dyeing and heat-styling. And as we all know, healthy hair is happy hair!

(6/9) — Anyone familiar with Gwen Stefani’s hair color knows that the pop star is not a natural blonde. But anyone who has dyed their hair blonde also knows the peskiness of darker roots growing back, making it obvious that it has been artificially colored. So how is it that Gwen Stefani’s hair color could totally pass for being naturally blonde? After all, we’ve never seen her with dark roots—or any other tell-tale sign of the unnatural platinum.

Luckily, for anyone curious about her magical root-free look, Gwen Stefani’s hairstylist Danilo Dixon has finally opened up about the singer’s secret. And surprise, surprise—it’s not tons of bleach.

“We color her hair every Monday, before we film The Voice,” Dixon revealed.

And not only does Dixon dye her hair every week, he also uses a special formula to keep her platinum shining bright as ever for every show.

“Gwen’s an Italian girl with wavy brown hair—if you look at the video for ‘Cool,’ we did her in her natural shade, maybe a little darker—so I developed a high lift formula for her,” he said. “I learned that I could get to a place of achieving the blond that I want, and the quality of hair that we need and want, by using a new product, as opposed to just bleach. People are like, ‘That’s not natural,’ and I say, ‘Of course it is—it’s supernatural.'”

So there you have it. The superstar’s secret is an extraordinary amount of touch-ups with a solid formula. Not that she has the same hair every week, though, of course. But luckily, Dixon isn’t intimidated by trying new styles; in fact, he welcomes them from the star.

“Of course I walk in with inspirations, but I want to see what you’re wearing, I want to know about the event, I want to know your responsibilities, I want to figure out what camera’s involved—all of it. [I ask] ‘What are you feeling tonight?'” he said. “It’s about you wearing it, not it wearing you, even though it can be completely over the top. I have an extraordinary Barbie doll and she happens to be a good friend, human being, and entertainer—and she looks good.”

We couldn’t agree more! But what about us regular ladies who can’t afford weekly trips to the salon? Fear not, there’s a wonderful (and cheap!) marker that you can you to cover your grays in seconds. It might not be a full ‘do, but it still looks downright professional—and the camera will love it just as much as it loves Gwen’s!
