Is Smoked Salmon a Healthy Food — And What Are the Best Ways To Enjoy It?

To me, salmon is the superior seafood because of its vibrant color and flaky texture. Smoked salmon in particular is my favorite way to enjoy this healthy fish. And recently, I got to take a deeper look into its nutritional benefits as well as try out Latitude 45’s delicious smoked salmon!

How healthy is smoked salmon?

This flavor-packed twist on salmon contains about 117 calories per 3.5 ounce serving and is packed with omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3’s are essential nutrients that have several functions, from decreasing inflammation to regulating blood clotting. As a result, getting enough omega-3’s can help you maintain healthy heart function, eye health, and slow brain aging. It also keeps chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer at bay.

Another great perk of enjoying smoked salmon is that it’s rich with vitamin B-6 and-12 alongside potassium. Vitamin B-6 is another key vitamin to maintaining sharp vision while B12 is necessary to forming red blood cells and offers mood-boosting effects. Salmon’s potassium content, on the other hand, does the trick to keep your energy levels healthy and rev up your metabolism to lose weight quicker (think of it as a miracle mineral!).

Salmon is also a great source of protein, which means eating it will satisfy your appetite and avoid unnecessary cravings. This makes it the perfect protein-rich food to have around breakfast time and start the day off right. The American Heart Association recommends that women over 40 consume two servings of fatty fish like salmon each week to get all of the amazing benefits from this superfood. Luckily, there’s plenty of mouthwatering ways to eat it for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

What is the best way to eat smoked salmon?

You can easily find smoked salmon in the refrigerated section of your local grocery store. A brand to try is Patagonia-based company Latitude 45, which has been a mainstay in the Chilean seafood industry for 30 years. Their product range includes both hot and cold smoked salmon. Also, they offer Cajun seasoned and peppered versions for a flavor-packed twist.

My favorite pick from Latitude 45’s offerings is their Cold Smoked Atlantic Salmon Loin (Buy from Walmart, $7.64 for a 6-ounce pack). The salty and smoky flavor makes it perfect to serve alongside a poached egg and toast, which is quickly becoming one of my go-to breakfast dishes. Also, it can be used for other meals whether you’re making zucchini pasta, a yummy chickpea wrap, or topping a few slices over a creamy potato and leek soup. Yum!
