Trader Joe’s Viral Mini Tote Bags Are Back—Hurry to Get Yours Before They Sell Out!

Trader Joe’s viral $2.99 mini totes are back, but only for a limited time. Here’s how to snag yours!

If you’re a Trader Joe’s fan, you might agree that it’s more of a lifestyle than a grocery store. Whether it’s the colorful signage, top-tier customer service or unique products, the chain has always been a fan favorite. And it’s no surprise it’s back in the spotlight with the return of the mini canvas tote bags, a viral hit earlier this year. These trendy totes, priced at just $2.99, have earned a cult following since flying off the shelves sooner than expected. Now back for a limited time, you’ll have to move quickly to snag one — here’s how to get the Trader Joe’s tote bags.

What are the Trader Joe’s tote bags?

According to Trader Joe’s website, the mini totes feature the same heavy-duty material as their larger Canvas Bags. The mini totes have a 65 percent cotton and 35 percent polyester blend. There are four color accents: navy, yellow, red and forest green.

With a compact size of 13 inches long, 11 inches tall by 6 inches wide, they make the perfect quick (and small) grocery run or cute fashion statement. The company claims you can fit up to 12 apples (or other TJ favorites like beauty products).

“The totes are a limited product rather than an everyday product at this time,” a spokesperson for Trader Joe’s told USA Today. Currently, the exact number of tote bags remains unclear.

If you want to grab one (or more), your best bet is to head to your nearest Trader Joe’s as soon as possible. The bags have returned to stores as of September 18, 2024, and they’re expected to sell out quickly. Some stores already have long lines, while others are limiting purchases to avoid shortages.

“Went to Chino Hills (CA) location to try to get a single yellow after work at 5 pm and line was around the block,” said one Reddit user. Another added that their Trader Joe’s location in San Dimas, CA, had a line that was “across the plaza towards the back dumpsters at 7:50 A.M.”

But it’s not the same experience everywhere — at certain locations, fans report being able to pick them up with ease. “Just happened to get a yellow bag today in Chicago suburbs (Downers Grove). I was buying some wine, so I figured I’d buy a bag to carry them home,” wrote one Reddit user. “No lines or craziness, but the employee said they were limited to four per customer and he figured they’d sell out by the end of the day.”

As a reminder, Trader Joe’s does not sell any products online. However, you can add them to your shopping list and print it out before your next errand run.

When did the Trader Joe’s canvas tote bags become popular?

You may remember the mini tote bags first making waves on social media back in March of 2024. Not only did Trader Joe’s locations see massive lines, as shown in the viral TikTok video below, but employees were forced to limit bag quantity per customer. According to a Trader Joe’s representative, the mini bags sold out far sooner than anticipated, before they had time to promote them.

Users raised some judgmental albeit appropriate questions in the comments section. These included, “Do you really need more than one tote bag?” and “This is actually insane, what do people need 15 mini tote bags for?”

Others, however, shared their excitement: “Stop this is so cute,” wrote one Reddit user. “Got four today! 2 blue and 2 green!” Another excited customer added.

Should you buy resale Trader Joe’s canvas totes?

For those unlucky enough to miss out, resale platforms like eBay and Facebook are already seeing listings with huge markups. To date, the most expensive listing sold on eBay was $499.99 for four mini totes in all colors, not including shipping. Other four-bag sets sold for a minimum of $100.

However, Trader Joe’s has openly discouraged these resales, urging shoppers to buy directly from stores while they last. They claimed in a statement to USA TODAY, “To be clear, we neither condone nor support the reselling of our products and do all we can to stop the practice.” However, with limited stock and the buzz showing no signs of slowing, resale prices will likely increase. Let us know in the comments below if you bought or want these totes!
