What is mochi?

What is “mochi,” exactly? For starters, the term “mochi” is a Japanese word that basically means “rice cake” (but instead of being tasteless and dry, they’re chewy and soft). If you were to eat a tiny piece of mochi — let’s say the size of a matchbox — it would be close to the equivalent of eating an entire bowl of rice — which, according to the My/Mo website, is how mochi became popular among the Samurai warriors (members of the Japanese military) years ago.

Because the soldiers had to find food that was portable, filling, and tasty, they decided to opt for mochi. During the Japanese Heian period, mochi was made out of red rice and used in religious rituals in the Shinto religion. It was often referred to as “Food for the Gods,” and promised a happy and unbroken marriage to those who ate it.

How about that? A delicious (low-calorie) snack that’s not only filling, but brings good fortune as well!
