Don’t Throw Out That Empty Oil Bottle Yet — Do This Instead

If you spend any amount of time in the kitchen, chances are you run out of olive or vegetable oil here and there given that they’re such staples. But the next time you’re tempted to just toss that oil bottle in the trash or recycling bin, don’t! Consider keeping it available and within arm’s reach instead.

This tip comes from writer Claire Lower, and it’s a great way to get another use out of that empty bottle. When you’re done with it, make sure there’s no more oil left and then leave it under your sink or in the back of your pantry. Then, the next time you’re making a meal and have excess cooking grease or oil, let it cool so that you won’t burn yourself or melt the bottle and then pour it into your empty oil container. Just store that bottle until it’s full, and then dispose of it in one swoop. This way, you’re not constantly trying to dump that extra oil and risk dirtying your kitchen after every use. (Lower also recommends buying a cheap funnel if the top of the bottle is a little narrow. You don’t want to create an extra mess in the process of pouring your liquid!)

Another great use for that empty bottle? Mixing your own special oil concoctions. In fact, cook and recipe creator Amiel Stanek recommends combining an equal parts olive oil-vegetable oil blend to create a more subtle and less fruity flavor than traditional olive oil that still adds a kick to your meals. He says it’s perfect for dishes like roasted vegetables, fried eggs, poached fish, or caramelized onions, so it may be worth a shot. And why store your new combo in a completely different container when you’ve already got a perfectly good one at your disposal?

Armed with these two hacks, you’ll get a little more out of that empty oil bottle and keep your kitchen nice and orderly! What more could you want?
