Young Kim Cattrall: 10 Must-See Photos of the Glamorous Actress Long Before ‘Sex and the City’

She started acting way back in 1975!

Kim Cattrall will forever be best known as Samantha Jones, the sassiest of the four Sex and the City ladies, but she was acting long before she landed that iconic part.

Born in 1956 in England and raised in Canada, young Kim Cattrall made her onscreen debut in the 1975 thriller Rosebud and worked steadily through the late ’70s, appearing in episodes of Columbo, Starsky and Hutch, The Incredible Hulk, Charlie’s Angels and other shows.

In the ’80s, Cattrall’s profile rose when she had roles in comedies of the day like Porky’s and Police Academy. In 1986, she played Kurt Russell‘s love interest in the action movie Big Trouble in Little China, and the next year, she had her breakout role when she played the sexy living mannequin who steals Andrew McCarthy‘s heart in — you guessed it! — the fantastical 1987 rom-com Mannequin.

Some of Cattrall’s pre-Sex and the City projects in the ’90s included The Bonfire of the Vanities, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (in which she played Captain Spock’s protege), Live Nude Girls and Unforgettable.

Playing the bawdy, powerful and stylish Samantha made Kim Cattrall a household name in her 40s, and with her seductive voice and eternal commitment to going over the top, it was truly the role the actress was born to play.

Here’s a look back at young Kim Cattrall in the years before her signature role.

Kim made her debut in the 1975 film Rosebud, the penultimate work by classic Hollywood director Otto Preminger. The young actress didn’t have a good experience on the film, saying, “Otto Preminger wasn’t very sensitive when he directed me in my first movie. I was 17 and he said I reminded him of Marilyn Monroe… for her lack of talent rather than her looks. I literally ran from that experience.”

2. Disco queen

Kim looked just as good brunette as she does blonde, and in this glamorous 1979 photo shoot she served up disco perfection in a sequined blue dress.

High ponytail? Check. Smoky eye? Check. Pout? Check. Blush? Check. Revealing top? Check. Yep, young Kim Cattrall definitely had her flirty look down pat long before Sex and the City.

4. She means business

With her hair tied up in a smart bun and a blazer and prominent collar, Kim made business casual look chic.

Kim had a number of stage roles before she became a well-known actress in movies and TV, including playing veteran actor Philip Baker Hall‘s mistress in Alfred and Victoria: A Life.

It’s hard to picture Samantha wearing ripped jeans, but Kim made them look good in a 1987 photo shoot at her apartment.

In an interview with The Guardian, Kim famously said, “I don’t want to be in a situation for even an hour where I’m not enjoying myself,” and this picture of her lounging poolside certainly embodies her philosophy.

Before becoming a major star, Kim struck a pensive pose at home in her minimal yet elegant apartment.

Given Kim’s association with fashionable city life, it’s easy to forget she was part of the Star Trek universe. However, her role has a very Samantha-esque rumor attached to it. During filming, she was alleged to have done a photo shoot on set while wearing nothing but her Vulcan ears!

It’s clear that ever since the beginning of her career, Kim Cattrall has been delightfully confident and charismatic, and knowing about her early days makes us appreciate Samantha even more.
