Few films have had the same cultural impact as Titanic (1997). Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack, Kate Winslet as Rose, as well as Billy Zane, Kathy Bates and Bill Paxton, the ‘90s romance told a story of class, everlasting love and sacrifice and to this day, we can’t hear that main theme without shedding a tear. The Academy Award-winning film, which took place on the fateful night in which the Titanic sank, followed young and wealthy Rose, who boarded the ship with her fiancé, and her blooming romance with Jack, a fellow passenger from a poor background. From the stunning performances by the cast who led to the music, set and costume design, Titanic has earned every bit of praise it’s received. Here, a look at 10 behind-the-scenes photos that show the film in a light like never before.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio and James Cameron discuss behind the scenes

While a young Leonardo DiCaprio was praised for his role in this 1997 romantic drama, prior to Titanic, the actor had already shown the world that he was destined for greatness with his performance in 1993’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? Regardless of his early fame, Titanic remains an important piece in the puzzle of his career.

Titanic was very much an experiment for Kate Winslet and I,” the actor told Deadline in 2016. “We’d done all of these independent movies. I loved her as an actress and she said, ‘Let’s do this together, we can do this.’ We did it, and it became something that we could’ve never foreseen.”

2. The trio of a lifetime

Though DiCaprio only worked with director James Cameron once, Winslet joined forces with the movie giant again after Titanic, when she had a role in his 2022 film, Avatar: The Way of Water.

3. Dressed to the nines

With dozens of stunning costumes to choose from, it’s hard to pick which one is our favorite—especially when it comes to the ornate dresses Rose is seen wearing throughout the film. It’s no wonder it won the Oscar for Best Costume Design!

4. Teaming up again

When Kate Winslet teamed up with James Cameron again for Avatar, things had changed over the years. “Jim, as a director, as a person, you know, we are just both different, older, have hopefully learned a lot more in terms of how to tell stories and be creative contributors and collaborators,” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2022.

5. Friends for life

How cute are these co-stars? We love knowing that this duo have remained close friends over the years, always being sure to support each other’s endeavors.

6. Lightening the mood

With a plot so heavy, who can blame Kate Winslet for breaking the ice with a funny face behind the scenes?! We love this starlet!

7. Fancy a swim?

While the budget for this film was out of this world, splurging on heating for the pool in which they filmed the ocean scenes just wasn’t a priority—the temperature of the water even resulted in Winslet getting hypothermia, she recalled on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

8. Long days and nights

Filming a Hollywood blockbuster doesn’t exactly fit into a nine-to-five type of schedule. “The first day started at 5 a.m. and went on to 1 a.m.” Kate Winslet told the LA Times back in 1997. “Nothing could have prepared me for it. There were quite a few 20-hour days. And two-thirds of it was night shooting—because the Titanic sank at night. It was every man for himself on the set—you had to ensure that you snatched some sleep during the day, with a black eye mask on. Sometimes you’d find yourself having lunch at 2 a.m. or breakfast at 4 p.m. It was very disorienting.”

9. Seeing double
