‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Returns for Its 4th and Final Season—Here’s What to Expect!
Find out what’s in store for the Gemstones as the hit HBO show comes to an epic close
For three seasons, Eli Gemstone, played by television and film icon John Goodman, and his three quirky, often-bumbling, overindulged adult children have made us laugh out loud on the HBO hit The Righteous Gemstones. The dramedy, which follows an influential televangelist family and the inner workings of their religious empire, was created by actor, writer and producer Danny McBride, and debuted back in 2019. The series has laid out various scandals the Gemstones have had to reconcile, threats to their organization that derail their day-to-day lives, and family drama in a way that, despite the occasionally serious matter at hand, manages to get us laughing each and every episode. With the fourth and final season set to hit screens on Sunday, March 9, take a look back on the past three seasons and what’s in store for the final installment of The Righteous Gemstones.Â

What happened in season 3 of ‘The Righteous Gemstones’?
The third season of this dark comedy took the three Gemstone kids, Jesse, Judy and Kelvin, on quite the wild ride. At the start, we’re introduced to Eli’s sister May-May, whose two sons are enmeshed in a militia group preparing for doomsday, led by their father Peter. As the series goes on, we come to learn that Peter spent time in prison after robbing a bank when he lost a large amount of money investing in the Gemstone’s Y2K doomsday survival buckets. Hoping to get her two boys, Karl and Chuck, free of their father, the Gemstones step in.
Meanwhile, while away on tour, Judy has an affair with a member of her band, tarnishing her relationship with BJ. As for Kelvin, his close companionship with Keefe also gets shaken up when he’s forced to replace him as a youth ministry leader. When it came to the hilarious Uncle Baby Billy, there’s always something up his sleeve, and this season was no different when he set his sights on his all-new game show, Uncle Baby Billy’s Bible Bonkers.Â
The season came to a head when the three Gemstone children were kidnapped by Peter’s militia, rescued with the help of May-May and Jesse’s son, Gideon, making for a season full of turns, angst and belly-laughs.Â
What will season 4 of ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ be about?
While nothing concrete has been revealed for the new season as far as specific plot points go, based on the trailer for season 4, fans can expect to see Jesse, Kelvin and Judy struggling with the idea of their father moving on with a woman besides their mother.Â
Additionally, we get a glimpse as Kelvin and Keefe’s relationship has evolved beyond platonic, and Uncle Baby Billy also seems to be up to his typical antics with his all-new young adult television program about the life of young Jesus (appropriately titled Teenjus). As for conflicts at hand, the trailer leads us to believe that the Simkins family may be back in some way or another.
Who will be in ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ season 4?
In the fourth and final season of the series, fans can expect to see John Goodman as Eli Gemstone, Danny McBride back as Jesse, Adam Devine as Kelvin and Edi Patterson as Judy, as well as Cassidy Freeman as Jesse’s wife Amber, Tim Baltz as Edi’s husband BJ and Tony Cavalero as the beloved Keefe. Also returning is Greg Alan Williams as the trusted Martin, Skyler Gisondo as Gideon, Walton Goggins as Uncle Baby Billy Freeman and Jennifer Nettles as Aimee-Leigh.
And fans can expect to see some new faces joining the cast as well! None other than funny lady Megan Mullally and film and TV icon Seann William Scott will share the screen with the Gemstones, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store!
