Get Your Midnight Margaritas Ready, ‘Practical Magic 2’ Is in the Works! Everything We Know

The witchy Owens sisters are returning for a sequel to the 1998 hit

It’s official: Practical Magic 2, a sequel to the 1998 film, is officially in the works! Keep scrolling to find out everything we know about the project.

‘Practical Magic 2’ is in the works

Not only were fans treated to the good news that Practical Magic 2 is coming, but original stars Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are in talks to return to the new film, reprising their roles as the Owens sisters.

Buzz around a potential reboot began on June 9, when it was announced on TikTok that the original film was available on digital and to stream on Max. It was only the next day when news of the reboot was officially shared with the world.

The original film, which was directed by Griffin Dunne, is an adaptation of the 1995 novel of the same name, written by Alice Hoffman. After a whirlwind of movie and series sequels and reboots — like Hocus Pocus and Charmed — it was only a matter of time before this Bullock and Kidman classic was brought back to life.

The ‘90s was an era for empowering witches in series and films like Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1996), Charmed (1998) and The Craft (1996). Practical Magic was no different, and the film is still one of the most beloved flicks based on witchcraft.

The film was in fact set for a spinoff series back in 2019, titled Rules of Magic, but there was never anything to follow. This reboot, however, seems to be the real deal. Akiva Goldsman, one of the original film’s co-writers, will be the screenwriter for this new update. It is also expected for Bullock and Kidman to be signed on as producers this time around.

What is Practical Magic about?

Sally (Bullock) and Gillian (Kidman) Owens were born into a line of witches but have avoided the craft most of their lives. Raised by their aunts, who embrace their magical gift, the Owens family is cursed: any man who falls for an Owens woman will be fated to an untimely death.

So after the unexpected passing of Gillian’s boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov, the sisters must give themselves a crash course in magic. Unfortunately, with their skills not yet up to snuff, they inject Angelov with an evil spirit threatening to end their family line.

Bullock shared what it was like filming the 1998 fantasy movie, stating, “I had such a great time. And the fact is, we don’t have anything in common, except for at the dinner table with a bottle of wine and everything sort of blends together.”

What to expect for ‘Practical Magic 2’

As for the film’s sequel? Nothing is known about the plot just yet as of publication. It is speculated the new film might be based on one of Hoffman’s other books from the series, but nothing is known just yet.

But rumors started swirling in February of this year when producer Denise Di Novi declared the spinoff was no longer in the works. But she also shared, “There is something else that’s going to happen that is still a secret, but I think the fans are going to be thrilled.”

The cast for the new film is also a question mark. All we know is that Kidman and Bullock are said to be in talks to return. As for the other witches in the coven — like Alexandra Artrip, Dianne Wiest, Stockard Channing or Evan Rachel Wood — the future is uncertain.
