Ian Somerhalder Reveals Which ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Couple Felt ‘A Little Forced’
The ‘TVD’ star says this on-screen romance didn’t feel quite right—do you agree?
The Salvatore Brothers, the vampires portrayed by Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley in The Vampire Diaries, reunited once again—this time for an episode of Hot Ones Versus, where both stars asked each other personal questions.

The first question was from Somerhalder, who starred as Damon Salvatore, about the show they starred in from 2009-2017, The Vampire Diaries.
“Name one storyline you think should have never made it out of the writer’s room?” Somerhalder asked Wesley, who played Stefan Salvatore. Wesley’s first thought was one of his character’s most popular romances, which was with the character Caroline (Candice King).
“After Nina [Dobrev, who played Elena Gilbert] left the show, they were like, ‘We need to pair Stefan with some romantic partner’ and then Stefan and Caroline ended up having a wedding and getting married, right?”
While this pair was a fun one for fans, Wesley and Somerhalder weren’t so sure about the match. Somerhalder responded, saying, “It was a little forced, but it was cute. She’s pretty and you’re pretty.”
About the Stefan and Caroline storyline
From the very beginning of the series, Stefan Salvatore had been madly in love with Elena Gilbert, and the pair became involved in an on-again off-again romance for four seasons. Their relationship quickly turned into a messy love triangle between the couple and Stefan’s brother, Damon. With all the back-and-forth, it was a question about who Elena would eventually end up with. But when she chose Damon, it seemed to be the end of the ship, #stelena.
When Dobrev left the series after the shocking season six finale, Stefan began to warm up to Caroline, who was Elena’s best friend. It took a bit of time, but Stefan and Caroline eventually fell for one another and got married by the end of the series, however, Stefan died shortly after their wedding.
About ‘The Vampire Diaries’
The Vampire Diaries instantly became a hit show, as the vampire theme was at an all-time high thanks to films like Twilight (2008) being at the height of their fame. The drama series ran for a total of eight seasons from 2009 until 2017, but Dobrev made a surprising exit after six seasons as the main character in 2015.
“I just knew I wanted to go on this journey with these characters, and their lives…it’s a vampire show,” Dobrev said after her exit. “It’s been a great journey, but at the end of the day, I’m not actually a vampire. The fairy tale has to end, and the next chapter has to begin.”
While it was speculated that her exit had something to do with her off-screen relationship with Somerhalder ending, both parties have denied that claim. Dobrev has shared that she was ready to experience more diverse roles and mature roles, as the character Elena was a teenager and Dobrev was 26.
Both Somerhalder and Wesley finished out the series as the Salvatore brothers, while Dobrev made one final appearance in the series finale in 2017.
