‘How Old Are You?’ The Barnetts Hit Their Breaking Point in ‘Good American Family’ Episode 3
Secrets, blood and a car crash—Episode 3 is its wildest yet
Buckle up, true crime lovers, because we just got another episode of Hulu’s new mini-series Good American Family, and it was jam-packed with crazy twists, disturbing plot lines and an ending that could very well be the end of the Barnett family as we know it! Below, we break down the episode, including details that you might have missed the first time around.
Why Kristine Barnett was arrested

Season 1, Episode 3 of Good American Family—entitled “Ghosts Everywhere”—opens in 2019 with Kristine Barnett (Ellen Pompeo) being released from prison. As she is, we hear a news report detailing how she allegedly left Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid) alone in an apartment and is now being charged with neglect.
We also learn that Kristine’s ex-husband, Michael Barnett (Mark Duplass), submitted all the evidence that led to her arrest. This leads to him being investigated as well; however, he has yet to be charged.
Natalia Grace’s behavior raises red flags

At the end of episode 2—which takes place in 2010—Kristine catches Natalia in the bathroom and learns that she has pubic hair, and in this week’s episode, she decides to go to a doctor’s office to get some answers. While there, the Barnetts learn that Natalia has a rare form of dwarfism, making it hard for doctors to determine her age. They do learn, though, that she does have adult teeth and might even suffer from reactive attachment disorder (RAD).
Following that, while cleaning, Kristine finds a bunch of bloody socks hidden on Natalia’s closet floor, suggesting that she does have her period. This theory is further confirmed after Kristine confronts Natalia about it, causing the alleged child to freak out and crash her adoptive mother’s car. After that, Natalia also puts a bloody tampon on the floor, which pushes Kristine to yell in her face: “How old are you?”
Desperate for answers, Kristine then goes to New Jersey to talk to Natalia’s former family. While there, she discovers that the birthday Natalia was using belonged to her old foster brother, and she was basically only living with them so they would pay for her surgeries.
Is Natalia doing the same thing with the Barnetts? Kristine certainly thinks so, but for some reason, Michael is skeptical and still thinks his adoptive daughter is just a sweet innocent little girl. Who’s right and who’s wrong? Guess we will have to wait and see.
Kristine and Michael’s marriage reaches breaking point

In the first episode of Good American Family, viewers learn that Kristine and Michael’s marriage was on the fritz and that the only reason they adopted Natalia in the first place was to try and fix their broken relationship. And it worked….for a little while.
Then, Natalia started to cause a rift between them, since Kristine thinks she is a sociopath scamming them, whereas Michael thinks she’s just a little girl who has had a very difficult life. This causes the couple to reach their breaking point, and at the end of this week’s episode, they agree to be married in name only.
They also agree that Michael will stay home with Natalia since he got fired from his job, and Kristine will continue to run her daycare for kids with disabilities and avoid her new daughter as much as she can.
Thanks to the show’s dual timeline, we learn that Kristine and Michael do get divorced, but the exact when and why remain to be revealed.
Good American Family airs every Wednesday on Hulu at midnight EST.
