‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’: See the Stars of the Beloved ’90s Rom-Com 30 Years Later

Four Weddings and a Funeral was a low budget rom-com that became a huge hit. Starring Hugh Grant in the role that made the charming Brit a US A-lister, the movie follows a bumbling bachelor, Charles, and his circle of friends as they attend five social occasions: four weddings and a funeral. As they navigate love and heartbreak, Charles meets and falls for an American woman named Carrie (Andie MacDowell), leading to a series of comedic and poignant events.

30 years after the film charmed audiences, here’s a look back at the Four Weddings and a Funeral cast.

Hugh Grant as Charles

CHARACTER PLAYED: Charles, the bumbling bachelor

BORN: September 9, 1960, in London, England.

BEST KNOWN FOR: Notting Hill (1999), Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), About a Boy (2002), Love Actually (2003), Music and Lyrics (2007)

PERSONAL: Hugh Grant is married to Swedish producer Anna Eberstein and he is the father to five children.

THOUGHTS ON FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL: In characteristically self-effacing fashion, Grant said, “It’s true that we were all sure we’d made a giant turkey till the film had its first previews. I was clearly wrong and the film changed my life.”

He also said, “They wanted to give me the worst haircut in the world — and it backfired on them all because it became a haircut that was copied.”

Andie MacDowell as Carrie in Four Weddings and a Funeral cast

CHARACTER PLAYED: Carrie, an American woman in England and Charles’ love interest

BORN: April 21, 1958, in Gaffney, South Carolina

BEST KNOWN FOR: Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), Hudson Hawk (1991), Groundhog Day (1993), Maid (2021)

PERSONAL: Andie MacDowell has a son, Justin Qualley, and two daughters, Margaret Qualley (who is now a well-known actress) and Rainey Qualley (who is now a singer and model), and has been married twice, to Paul Qualley and Rhett Hartzog.

THOUGHTS ON FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL: “I was in London doing publicity for Groundhog Day when I read the script. It was just brilliant – one of the best I’d ever come across,” she said. “Richard Curtis is a very quick-witted writer, with a great sense of humor and a beautifully romantic heart. Intelligent humor is something I really enjoy doing.”

MacDowell also spoke highly of her costar, saying, “Working with Hugh Grant was easy. He was just so adorable and funny. When I met him, I told the director Mike Newell, ‘Well, this is going to be easy.’ And it was. It was as if the character had been written as an instrument for Hugh’s charm and self-deprecation. The film was the first time people had seen him in such a big production and he did a beautiful job.”

Reflecting on the production of the film, she said, “We had a small budget but it didn’t look cheap. Things actually felt luxurious and the locations were beautiful. I had my two kids with me so I wasn’t hanging out all the time, but everyone got along really well. We didn’t do a lot of takes because we didn’t have much time: the entire film was shot in just 36 days.”

Kristin Scott Thomas as Fiona

CHARACTER PLAYED: Fiona, Charles’ posh friend

BORN: May 24, 1960, Cornwall, England.

BEST KNOWN FOR: The English Patient (1996), Gosford Park (2001), Only God Forgives (2013), Darkest Hour (2017)

PERSONAL: Kristin Scott Thomas was married to French doctor François Olivennes and they had three children.

THOUGHTS ON FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL: While appearing on The Graham Norton Show, Scott Thomas confessed that when she watched the film she “thought it was a bit of a dud at first.”

She said, “The only time I saw it I was all by myself in a cinema in Paris where there wasn’t anyone to laugh with, and I didn’t find the jokes particularly funny. But then I was on a plane in the days when everyone watched the same film and people were laughing so I thought, ‘Maybe I am mistaken, maybe it’s quite good.’”

Simon Callow as Gareth Four Weddings and a Funeral cast

CHARACTER PLAYED: Gareth, the outgoing gay friend of the protagonists

BORN: June 15, 1949, in London, England.

BEST KNOWN FOR: A Room with a View (1985), Maurice (1987), Shakespeare in Love (1998), The Phantom of the Opera (2004)

PERSONAL: Simon Callow has been married to Sebastian Fox since June 2016.

THOUGHTS ON FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL: Callow said that he appreciated how the film offered a different narrative when it came to his character’s sexual orientation: “When the movie came out in 1994, AIDS was rampant. We’d just had Philadelphia, an honorable film with noble intentions, but once again homosexuality was identified with disease. Disease and prison were the two ways most people thought about gay people. Gareth didn’t give a toss about any of that. He died from an excess of joy and generosity, which was a wonderful thing.”

John Hannah as Matthew

CHARACTER PLAYED: Matthew, Gareth’s partner

BORN: April 23, 1962, in East Kilbride, Scotland.

PERSONAL: John Hannah is married to actress Joanna Roth and together they have two children.

THOUGHTS ON FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL: After becoming famous for Four Weddings in a Funeral, Hannah remained humble, saying, “If you’re going to be recognized, it’s nice if people recognize you for a good thing. You’re not the guy who chopped the heads off 14 women in Yorkshire; you’re the guy in that film.”

THOUGHTS ON FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL: Fleet recalled the film’s modest origins, saying, “No one was very starry — in fact, we all had terrible hay fever while filming it. At the time, I didn’t think anyone was going to like it, but it was a huge success and great fun to do.”
