A ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ TV Series Is Coming—Here’s Everything We Know So Far!

The 2018 film left us wanting more!

Comments

In 2018, Crazy Rich Asians became a box-office hit. Starring Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan and Michelle Yeoh, the film was romantic, heartwarming, yet laugh-out-loud funny. Based on the novel by Kevin Kwan, the hit movie has had people itching for more for years—and a few weeks ago, it was revealed that Max (formerly HBO Max) would be developing a television show that would be based on the books in the series. Here, everything we know so far about the Crazy Rich Asians TV show adaptation.

What was ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ about?

The 2018 romantic comedy directed by Wicked (2024) director John M. Chu told the story of a professor named Rachel (Constance Wu), who joins her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) in attending his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Upon her arrival, Rachel comes to learn that Nick’s family is astronomically wealthy, which differs from her humble background, and results in their judgment and disapproval over her and Nick’s relationship.

What’s happening with the ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ sequel?

In 2018, it was confirmed that a sequel to the first film was in development, with John M. Chu set to return in bringing the film to life. However, recent updates from Chu himself confirmed that there had yet to be any major moves made. “I won’t bring everyone back unless it’s worth it. There’s too much on the line for everybody,” he told Deadline’s Crew Call in November of 2024. “I want the best thing. I want it to be worthy of what Crazy Rich Asians 1 was. We’ve tried all different versions. It’s hard because people think the first movie is like the book, but it actually is not. It’s the right spirit, but the plotting is very different. And so, you can’t just go and translate. And we’ve tried versions and the fact is, is that we just haven’t gotten there.”

What to expect from the new ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ TV series

While there have yet to be any details revealed about the plot of the series, many are wondering if it will correspond with the novels. However, being that the first film doesn’t directly correspond with the first book, how the story might continue remains a mystery. The sequel to the first book in the series is China Rich Girlfriend, released in 2015, and continues the story of Rachel and Nick as their relationship progresses toward marriage and Rachel discovers the identity of her birth father.

Will the new series replace the sequel?

The mystery surrounding the Crazy Rich Asians sequel film and the new announcement of the series has fans wondering if the series is the sequel, or if it’s set to be something different entirely. Though nothing has been confirmed or denied, John M. Chu shed some light on the situation in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

We needed more real estate, that was the reality,” he said. “We developed the movie over and over and over again and we’re still working on a version of something that I won’t talk about now, but the TV landscape allowed us to use all the characters.” Chu continued, “I don’t know if it’s in lieu of a sequel but it felt clear that every character we wanted to explore needed more room and just a movie wasn’t doing it for us.”
