‘As If!’ Alicia Silverstone Returns as Cher in a New ‘Clueless’ Sequel Series—Everything We Know

The 1995 classic is getting a reboot and we’re totally pausing to see her reprise the iconic role!

It looks like we won’t be totally buggin’ anymore, because a Clueless revival starring Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone) herself is officially in the works at Peacock! This will be the first time the actress has reprised her role as the Beverly Hills, California teen heiress since the film’s initial release in 1995. Below, we have gathered up everything we know about the sequel series, including which cast members could potentially make an appearance. Read on for more.

What to know about the ‘Clueless’ sequel series

On April 18, it was announced that a Clueless sequel TV series was officially in the works at Peacock, the popular streaming platform from NBCUniversal. It was also shared that Silverstone would reprise her role as Cher. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage—both of whom worked on The O.C. and Gossip Girl and own a company called Fake Empire—along with Jordan Weiss will serve as writers and producers.

They will be joined by Clueless alumni, Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the original film, and producer Robert Lawrence. CBS Studios and Universal Television are also reportedly involved in the project.

“Totally buggin’… in the best way,” Silverstone, 48, wrote on Instagram.

This news comes after CBS tried to produce another sequel show in 2019, centered around Cher’s best friend Dionne Davenport (Stacey Dash). It was cancelled before it aired.

That was the last time the studio tried to do anything Clueless-related.

Who’s in the ‘Clueless’ sequel cast? Could Paul Rudd return?

Since the show’s plot has yet to be announced, it is unclear who will be joining Silverstone on set. However, it is safe to say that since Dash was going to revive her role as Dionne in 2019, there is a strong chance she could come back.

Another potential cast member is Silverstone’s love interest, Paul Rudd, who played Josh in the film. In the past, the actor has spoken quite fondly of his time working on the film and even revealed some behind-the-scenes secrets, revealing at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo in 2019 that one of the scenes from the film still haunts him.

When I go to the kitchen and make the sandwich, I put the mayonnaise on the bread, not directly onto the turkey itself. A little thing about me is I hate mayonnaise and I hate condiments. And it skeeved me out. I had never had mayonnaise on a sandwich, and I was so nervous with the timing of the scene, I just put the mayonnaise on the turkey. Now, when I see that scene, it’s like nails on a chalkboard.”

Sadly, though, with or without Dash and Rudd, the film will be missing a key cast member, as one of its leads, Brittany Murphy, who played Tai Fraiser, died in 2009 from pneumonia. She was 32.

“I just remember thinking she [Murphy] was so great for the part,” Silverstone told Vogue in 2020. “I can’t remember how many girls came in to audition for Tai that day, and I don’t know if I saw a few girls for it or just her, but I remember Brittany being really adorable.”

When will the ‘Clueless’ sequel series premiere?

Currently, there is no news on when the Clueless sequel series will be released or how many episodes there will be. One thing Peacock does love to do, though, is release one episode at a time every week at a certain time, so when the time comes, it is safe to assume they may do that with Silverstone’s project as well.
