Minnie Driver Reveals Her Thoughts on Engagement to Josh Brolin: Inside Their Relationship

Known for films like Good Will Hunting (1997), Return to Me (2000) and Ella Enchanted (2004), Minnie Driver has built quite the career for herself over the years — and with stardom comes famous acquaintances.

Perhaps one of her most notable ties was to actor Josh Brolin, whom she was engaged to in 2001 — and just recently, Driver has spoken out on her famed almost-marriage. Keep scrolling to find out what she said about the one that got away.

Minnie Driver talks about Josh Brolin

In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the 54-year-old actress reflected on the relationships she saw growing up, specifically that of her parents, and how that influenced her — most notably, the fact that her father and mother never married despite being together for 16 years, as he had another family with another woman.

If I look at my history,” she said in the interview, “What it did was make me want to be married so much and then choose men who were so not the right men to be married to.” She continued, “So I would carry on longing to be married and to have that conservative version [of a relationship], find men who had no interest in that, and then if one did, run a mile.”

She touched on her relationship with Brolin, saying, “The one time I was engaged it would have been, I think, the biggest mistake of my life.”

The actor and actress duo met on the set of their film Slow Burn (2000) and got engaged in 2001, only to call things off a few months later. Despite the rocky relationships of her past, Driver is content with the way things are going for her lately, and has enjoyed a loving and healthy relationship with Addison O’Dea, a filmmaker. The couple celebrated their five year anniversary this past November.

Of her relationship with O’Dea, “Now I’m with someone who doesn’t want to get married but who is the most devoted, loving, extraordinary…” Driver said. “Everything I could have wanted in my childhood idea of a husband, he actually is.” And we wish this duo nothing but a lifetime of happiness!

Minnie Driver’s relationship past

Brolin wasn’t the only famous face of Hollywood the British-American actress has been linked to over the years. Famously, she dated her Good Will Hunting co-star Matt Damon, but he broke things off not long before the 1998 Oscars.

Driver recalled feeling “devastated at the time” in the comments of an Instagram video of Ben Affleck and her ex Damon’s acceptance speech at the award show. She further explained that not long after their relationship came to an end, the Good Will Hunting leading man had brought his new girlfriend to the ceremony.

One thing is for sure — movie star or not, there’s nothing as gut wrenching as young heartbreak, as seen by the look on Driver’s face in this clip. However, she’s learned quite a bit since those early days of heartache, telling TODAY that the advice she’d give her younger self would be, “Don’t date actors,” earning a laugh from the hosts.
