Aaron Burr, sir: Details on Leslie Odom Jr.’s return to ‘Hamilton’

Broadway fans are celebrating the news that Odom Jr. is returning to his Tony-winning role of Aaron Burr. He’ll take the stage at the Richard Rodgers Theater for 12 weeks from September 9, 2025, to November 23, 2025.

Odom Jr. originated the role and won a Grammy (in addition to his Tony) for his original Broadway cast recording. The announcement comes around the show’s 10th anniversary. He played Burr probably 500 times or more, but left with Lin-Manuel Miranda (Alexander Hamilton) for his last show in 2016.

“Returning to ‘Hamilton’ is a deeply meaningful homecoming,” Odom Jr. said in a press release. “I’m so grateful for the chance to step back into the room—especially during this anniversary moment and to revisit this brilliant piece that forever changed my life and the lives of so many.”

Leslie Odom Jr. was personally invited back to ‘Hamilton’

While on TODAY, Odom Jr. shared that Jeffrey Seller, Miranda and Thomas Kail, all creative team members, invited him to reprise his role. The show opened on his birthday in 2015. “I’ll be at the Richard Rodgers Theater in the role of Aaron Burr. I’m not switching parts,” he said regarding the announcement.

Currently, Odom Jr. is the only original cast member to return, and he’s excited to perform with a new group of actors. “I want them to see something exciting and alive. And the best way for me to do that is to be open and present in that moment,” he told The Associated Press.

‘Hamilton’ is a broadway sensation

With 11 Tony awards, including best new musical, best book and best score, plus a 10-year run on Broadway, Hamilton has easily left its mark.

The original cast also featured Daveed Diggs, Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff and Anthony Ramos. Since its first curtain in 2015, the show has hit theaters nationwide, and those not local to New York City can watch the filmed version on Disney+.

The story follows the rise and fall of one of America’s most influential founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton, and how the people around him influenced both his career and personal life. Odom Jr. is rereading Ron Chernow’s biography to prepare for the role.

Odom Jr. doesn’t deny that his role in Hamilton put him on the map. “I was born on the stage of the Richard Rodgers in so many ways. It gave me life in a way,” he said to the AP. “I’m really looking forward to it.”

While he may have sealed Hamilton’s fate on stage, Odom Jr. lit up the theater as Aaron Burr in unforgettable numbers like ″Wait for It,” ″Dear Theodosia,” ″The Room Where It Happens″ and ″Your Obedient Servant.″

The songs have stayed with him over the years as he performs them during concerts, but he admitted that he’ll have to relearn the score for the musical. He added, “One of the most important gifts that it gave me was this association with some recognizable tunes that people like to hear.”
