Dolly Parton Pushed Miley Cyrus Into Performing at the 2024 Grammys: ‘You’re Going to Show Off’

The queen of country gave her goddaughter some tough career love

Dolly Parton is all about the gentle – but tough – love, especially when it comes to her family.

Miley Cyrus recently made an appearance on Netflix’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, where she detailed a tough conversation she had with longtime family friend and mentor, country sensation Parton. The former Disney star detailed the interaction revolving around the 2024 Grammy Awards, noting that Parton didn’t give her much of an option. Keep scrolling for everything Cyrus shared about their close relationship.

Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus’ relationship dates back years

For those who might not be aware, Parton has been a part of the singer’s life since she was a baby.

I’m her honorary godmother. I’ve known her since she was a baby,” Parton told Good Morning America in 2009.

“Her father’s a friend of mine, and when she was born, he said, ‘You just have to be her godmother,’ and I said, ‘I accept.’ We never did do a big ceremony, but I’m so proud of her, love her and she’s just like one of my own.”

During her interview with Letterman, Cyrus explained, “I don’t remember our first meeting, I was so young. My dad and her worked together in the ‘90s. They had music together and I think my dad even toured with her.”

As a matter of fact, some fans might remember Parton’s appearances on Cyrus’ hit show, Hannah Montana, over the years, where the 78-year-old singer portrayed her godmother on the screen as well.

During her interview with Letterman, Cyrus even made a connection between her fictional character of the teen superstar and Dolly.

“I mean, Hannah Montana is famous for wearing a blonde wig and kind of having this other persona that she can turn off and be a regular girl by day and have this superstar life at night,” she explained, “and I realize that’s something that Dolly has been doing pretty much her entire life.”

Miley Cryus turned to Dolly Parton for tough advice

In 2024, Cyrus gave an iconic performance of one of her most recent hits, “Flowers,” at the Grammy Awards. Additionally, she won her first two Grammy Awards at the famed ceremony: one for Record of the Year and another for Best Pop Solo Performance.

However, prior to the ceremony, she sought out some advice from her trusted pal.

“A tough conversation I had with her: I told her, ‘I’m wondering if I’m going to do the Grammys or not.’ ‘And she said, ‘Well of course you’re going to do the Grammys, and you’re not just going to show up but you’re going to show off. And you’re going to be everything that you are sitting right here in front of me.’”

Luckily for viewers all over the world, Cyrus took the advice to heart and gave the performance of a lifetime. “Don’t forget about the beauty. The hair, the makeup, the whole show. It’s armor for us,” Parton advised the young singer.

Cyrus continued, “She’s always said this to me, ‘You do you and I’ll do me, and together we’ll be us.’”

“So, she wasn’t telling me to be Dolly, she wasn’t telling me to be fabulous and hide behind the sparkles and the hair. She was telling me to be me.”
