Bobby Flay’s a master in the kitchen and a personality we can’t get enough of on our televisions, but perhaps most importantly, he’s a doting dad to Sophie. The Food Network icon, cookbook author and restaurateur welcomed his darling daughter back in 1996 with his then-wife Kate Connelly. While she’s teamed up with her father several times over the years for numerous projects, she’s certainly not living in his shadow. Though she’s shown off her own culinary expertise over the years, Sophie has forged her own path as an accomplished journalist working with ABC 7 News—and her coverage on everything from the Olympics to the Los Angeles wildfires is certainly impressive. Sophie Flay’s resume is as impressive as her famous father’s
At 28 years old, the accomplished reporter has proven that she is a force to be reckoned with. The USC alum, who currently resides in sunny California, additionally works as an adjunct professor at her alma mater teaching journalism courses. When she’s not shining in front of the camera with ABC 7, you can catch her dazzling on Food Network across countless programs. Over the years, you may have seen her on shows like Beat Bobby Flay, Brunch at Bobby’s, The Flay List and perhaps their most collaborative effort, Bobby and Sophie on the Coast. And working alongside his daughter is something Bobby adores!
“We don’t think of this as work. This is totally fun. It’s just the two of us. And I think it actually helps our relationship because we get to talk even more about how we feel about things,” Bobby told People in 2021 about working with his daughter on another one of their collaborations, the Always Hungry podcast. The entertaining podcast highlighted both their differences coming from separate generations and occupations, as well as their similarities as a father-daughter duo. Episodes covered topics that ranged from meal planning and hosting dinner parties to the difficulty of baking.
Bobby and Sophie’s literary collab
In 2022, Sundays with Sophie: Flay Family Recipes for Any Day of the Week, was published, and was a joint effort between Bobby and his daughter. The recipes and book itself pay homage to Sophie’s favorites and serve to inspire the home cook to bring the same care to each one of their everyday meals that you would for an elaborate Sunday feast. While most of Sophie and her dad’s teamwork has been food-adjacent, the duo shares many common interests that have brought them together over the years.
“We have a lot of similar interests,” Sophie told Parade in 2019. “We like a lot of the same TV shows. We actually like a lot of the same podcasts, but we also love horse racing and being able to share that bond has been great because he got his love for horse racing from his grandfather and it has now passed down to me.”
