Jillian Lauren Shriner—the longtime wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner—was shot by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) before being arrested for attempted murder in Eagle Rock, a popular Los Angeles neighborhood, on Wednesday, April 9. Following the shooting, police confirmed that she had sustained non-life-threatening injuries and that her husband was not involved in the altercation. We break down what exactly led to the shooting and what Jillian was doing before she was arrested.

What to know about Jillian Lauren Shriner’s arrest

The 51-year-old author confronted police officers in her front yard as they were attempting to apprehend suspects in a hit-and-run—she was not involved. However, according to police, Jillian pointed a gun at the officers and was subsequently injured. She was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after being checked into hospital.

Upon the officers’  arrival on her property, Jillian reportedly weilded a handgunand, after numerous requests for her to put it down, law enforcement took action. Her injuries have been described as not life-threatening.

“At that point there were some commands given, multiple commands to drop the gun, drop the weapon, unfortunately it did result in an officer-involved shooting,” Detective Meghan Aguilar from the LAPD said in a news conference, per NBC News.

The officers were wearing body cameras at the time of the conflict, but Aguliar said that they didn’t provide “a clear view of what she did with that firearm,” making it hard to determine if Jillian “fired at officers or not.”

Both Jillian and her husband Scott have yet to comment on the events.

Where Jillian was on the days leading up to the shooting

On Tuesday, April 8, Jillian posted a picture on Instagram from 2020, sharing that she was missing being on her book tour

A month before her officer-involved troubles, the author took the time to let her followers know that she had cancer and had undergone a hysterectomy, as well as one other surgery to try and get ahead of it.

“I’d like to thank the Academy, my amazing hair and makeup team, and the lighting designers here at #glendaleadventisthospital . As if they all hadn’t been through enough with the fires right next door! Yes, I have a little bit of the C word, y’all. I know a lot of us do,” she wrote on March 4. “I’m here to thank the incredible oncology team here, who pulled me through a complicated operation without a hitch. I am always so grateful for every second of the compassionate and excellent medical care I receive in my life. Thank you to all the remarkable health care workers who take our lives in your hands. And let’s all breathe.”

Jillian posted again on March 22 to let people know that she was recovering from her surgeries, marking the last time she commented on her cancer journey.

Two back-to-back surgeries, including a full hysterectomy. I feel called upon to mention it because I know only two people who had this procedure, and neither is with us today. They weren’t here for me to call and ask what to expect. I’m saying: I’m here. Ask me. I’m okay and healing today. And look at this beautiful beam of light, this new journal I got, the baby yellow-bellied finches outside my bedroom window,” she wrote. “That’s my story today. I thank you for your overwhelming support, and I love most of you. Kidding. I love you all. May we all be well tonight.”

It is unclear if her past medical issues have been an issue in her post-shooting recovery.
