How Tori Spelling Found Strength and Took on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ With the Support of ‘90210’ Cast

Tori Spelling is on a journey of self-discovery on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ after a year of heartbreak

We all know and love Tori Spelling as none other than Donna Martin of Beverly Hills, 90210. But just last night, the now 51-year-old actress made her debut on Dancing With the Stars and has been receiving love from her former co-stars and friends. Amid Spelling’s tough divorce and the tragic death of co-star Shannen Doherty, the 90210 love couldn’t come soon enough.

Brian Austin Green’s sweet words of encouragement for Tori Spelling

Brian Austin Green, who portrayed Spelling’s on-screen boyfriend, David Silver, gave his support for his lifelong friend. Green, who also competed on the series in season 30 with partner, and now-wife, Sharna Burgess, shared a sweet message to Spelling while attending a 90210 panel at 90s Con.

“Keep your head on, enjoy the experience,” he said. “It’s a seven-day-a-week job.”

Spelling revealed she was hesitant to join the show, and it was Green who inspired her to just do it. She shared she had been offered the spot many times before but was “too terrified to ever say yes.”

Brian Austin Green has known me the whole time since I got that phone call,” Spelling shared. “So that whole time I was like, ‘I don’t know if I should do or shouldn’t do it,’ but he was like, ‘You will be amazing, you need to do this.’”

Spelling also received love from her on and off-screen best friend, Jennie Garth, who portrayed Kelly Taylor on 90210. “I’m so excited for her I think she’s going to do great,” Garth shared of Spelling.

Gabrielle Carteris, who played Andrea Zuckerman, and Ian Ziering had kind words to say as well, while attending 90s Con with Garth and Green. Carteris said that she was really excited for her friend while Ziering added, “We’re all rooting for her. Make sure you do the same.”

Tori Spelling opens up about divorce on her podcast

Earlier this year, it was announced that Spelling and her husband, Dean McDermott, were separating and seeking a divorce. However, Spelling explained on her podcast, misSPELLING that she wanted to file for divorce for “like… 15 years.”

“We always say, ‘Hey, it made it 18 years. It shouldn’t have made it 18 years,” Spelling explained. “And I think he would say the same thing if he and I had a real heart-to-heart. It would have been over a lot sooner.”

Spelling explained during the DWTS premiere that she was ready to rediscover herself following the end of her marriage. “I’m going through a really public divorce. Everything I thought I was, has been burned to the ground. I’m ready to find myself again in front of millions of people.”

2024 has been difficult for more than just her divorce. Spelling has been grieving the loss of 90210 cast mate and friend, Doherty, who passed on July 13, 2024, following a long battle with breast cancer.

“How could I summarize someone I’ve known for 36 years?” Spelling shared about her friend. “It’s over half my life. [This was] someone I grew up with and someone who was my best friend.”

Following the news of Doherty’s passing, Spelling shared an Instagram Story of the two of them, paying tribute to Doherty and their friendship. “I don’t have outwards words yet… but WE knew and that’s what matters,” she wrote, adding several broken heart emojis.

Tori Spelling’s  ‘Dancing with the Stars’ debut

Spelling performed in her first dance on September 17 with DWTS pro partner, Pasha Pashkov, who has had nothing but kind words to say.

Tori has been so dedicated, so focused. She has five kids, she has so much on her plate, but she shows up, and for those two hours, I have her full intention, her full commitment, all of her focus and attention there. So, I couldn’t ask for more.”
