Tony Hawk and Kurt Cobain’s Grandson Makes His Debut—See the Adorable Family Photo!

The iconic skateboarder and rock star now share something more special than 1990s stardom—a grandson!

In the 1980s and 90s, Tony Hawk was dominating skating competitions while Kurt Cobain—along with his band Nirvana—was topping the alternative music charts. Now, the two pop culture icons are inextricably linked by family as Hawk’s son and Cobain’s daughter welcomed their child in September. See the newest photo of Hawk holding his grandson Ronin and hear what he has to say about his family’s most recent blessing.

Kurt Cobain’s 32-year-old daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, and Tony Hawk’s 31-year-old son, Riley Hawk, welcomed their baby boy Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk on Tuesday, September 17.

In a post on her Instagram page on September 29, new mother Frances wrote, “Welcome to the world most beautiful son. We love you more than anything.” The caption was featured alongside three black-and-white photos of Ronin with his parents.

Eager to celebrate the arrival of his grandson, Tony was quick to appear in the post’s comment section writing “My favorite grandson!” under the photo slideshow that Frances shared.

Some fans commented that Tony announcing being a grandfather made them feel their age as they reminisced about the 90s when the skateboarder was at peak celebrity.

“Makes me feel old but I’m glad I’m around to see it,” wrote one Reddit user under a photo of Tony holding Ronin

Other fans expressed some jealousy when it came to Ronin’s talented family tree and even mused about how the newborn might inherit skills from his iconic grandfathers.

“That kid will be doing kick-flips before other kids his age will be able to walk good,” another Reddit user wrote.

Married in October 2023, Ronin’s new parents, Frances and Riley, took after both of their fathers when it came to their choice of career.

Fitting for the daughter of a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Frances is a visual artist and model. She works across several mediums and often features her artwork on her Instagram page.

“I would hope that he would be proud of the human being I am even if he didn’t like the art I am putting out. That’s all I would ask of anyone in my life,” Frances told E! In 2018 about her artistic endeavors in the context of her father’s legacy.

Riley on the other hand followed in the footsteps of his sporting father and pursued professional skateboarding. He was notably celebrated as Skateboarder Magazine’s 2013 Amateur of the Year when he was 21 years old.

Ronin will only know one grandfather in Tony, as Kurt passed away in 1994 by suicide.

This past April marked 30 years from Kurt’s death when his daughter Frances was only 20 months old. She commemorated the occasion with a sentimental post on Instagram.

“I wish I could’ve known my Dad,” Frances wrote on April 5. “I wish I knew the cadence of his voice, how he liked his coffee or the way it felt to be tucked in after a bedtime story. I always wondered if he would’ve caught tadpoles with me during the muggy Washington summers, or if he smelled of Camel Lights & strawberry Nesquik (his favorites, I’ve been told).”

In addition to her reflective writing, Frances also featured a selection of photos that showed her and Kurt together in the few months they shared as father and daughter before his passing.
