Watch: Shakira Brings Nanny Onstage for Emotional ‘El Jefe’ Tribute—A Bold Statement to Her Ex
Shakira makes a powerful statement with a surprise onstage moment and an emotional backstory
Shakira is not done making bold statements against her ex, Gerard Piqué and she took the opportunity once more at a concert in Mexico. The singer had her nanny join her onstage for a performance of her song, “El Jefe,” which was an apparent dig at her ex.
During her performance, Shakira dedicated the song to her nanny, Lili Melgar, saying, “Tell the truth, you still haven’t been paid for your compensation?” To which Melgar responded by shrugging and smiling. Shakira was referring to a situation with her ex, who had a hand in the firing of their nanny.
The story behind Shakira’s song ‘El Jefe’
As it goes, Lili Melgar was a nanny for Shakira and Piqué’s two sons, Milan and Sasha, for many years. In 2022, it was discovered that Piqué had cheated on her multiple times, which Melgar allegedly shared with the singer. Once Piqué found out that Melgar shared the information, he fired her and refused to pay her any compensation.
Melgar was allegedly allowed the choice to remain in Spain or to travel back to Miami with Shakira and begin a new life. When she chose to stick with the singer, Piqué’s legal team claimed she had done things not in her job description, which was to care for the couple’s children.
Shakira and Piqué eventually separated after 11 years together, likely due to Pique’s infidelity. But when she discovered that he had fired their nanny for airing his grievances, the singer hired her back, paid her what she deserved and offered her a portion of the royalties from the song, “El Jefe,” which translates to “The Boss.”
In the song, there is a lyric dedicated to Melgar, referencing the situation between Melgar and her ex.
“Lili Melgar, Para ti esta canción, que no te pagaron la indemnización,” the lyric goes, which translates to “Lili Melgar, this song is for you, for they didn’t pay you compensation.”
Shakira’s relationship timeline with Gerard Piqué

The singer first met Piqué, a former Spanish soccer player, in 2010 on the set of her music video for “Waka Waka.” Piqué only briefly appeared in the video, which became the official song for the World Cup in South Africa, but the two formed a lasting connection.
Shakira and Piqué made their relationship official in March 2011 and first appeared on the red carpet in early 2012. Later that year, they announced they were expecting their first child and their son, Milan, was born in January 2013. Almost exactly two years later, the couple welcomed their second child together, son Sasha, in January 2025.
In 2020, Shakira opened up about her reasons for not marrying Piqué and why she was scared to make it official.
“To tell you the truth, marriage scares the s— out of me,” Shakira explained. “I don’t want him to see me as the wife. I’d rather him see me as his girlfriend.”
Of course, in 2022, the couple announced they were separating and asked, “for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children.” The two reached an eventual custody agreement.
