Pink Credits Her Strict Military Dad for Making Her a Strong Mother
Pink isn’t shy when it comes to sharing her experience as a mom to son Jameson Moon, 15 months, and daughter Willow Sage, 6, and as a wife to extreme sports star, Carey Heart. So when the superstar singer was titled “The World’s Most Beautiful Person” by People, she took the opportunity to share some more golden nuggets of parenting wisdom, this time about raising strong kids and the importance of growing up with rules.
The singer credits her own upbringing in Doylestown, Pennsylvania for her parenting techniques. Pink told People her father Jim was “really strict” when she was growing up. The star insisted his military background made him a disciplinarian, something that Pink says she was glad for.
At 38, Pink, who has two beautiful children and three Grammys to her name, says she’s a “tough mama” but also an honest one. “I’m a truth-teller,” she says. “I tell my daughter the truth. I let her be six, but I want her to know about fairness and kindness, and that you have to fight for your rights, and that sometimes girls aren’t paid as much as boys for the same job, and girls aren’t treated the same and that they have to work harder for everything.” As for raising her son Jameson, Pink wants him to know he’s not only allowed to be sensitive, but it’s encouraged. “There’s a documentary called The Mask You Live In that’s incredible [in explaining] how ‘be a man’ are three of the most detrimental words that can be said to a little boy.”
Despite her aggressive on-stage persona, Pinks says she’s a big-time crier, so much so that her daughter had to have a few words with her. “I’m all about crying. I think everybody should cry more,” she says. “Willow’s kind of tired of my tears. She said the other day, ‘Mama, I promise to tell you more about my feelings if you promise to tell me less about yours.'”
Pink’s parenting techniques have always been in keeping with the times. Previously, she explained she doesn’t want her children conforming to traditional gender roles and has ensured they’re growing up in a “label-less household.”
“We are a very label-less household,” the 38-year-old told People. “Last week, Willow told me she is going to marry an African woman. I was like, ‘Great, can you teach me how to make African food?’ And she’s like, ‘Sure mama, and we are going to live with you while our house is getting ready.'”
When asked how she would describe her daughter’s personality, Pink spilled to People, “Willow is very literal. She’s got a scientific brain. She’s really funny, really sassy, a little too smart.” Daughter Willow sounds just like her tough mama!
Pink might be an international pop star, but that doesn’t stop her from getting emotional, especially where her children are concerned. Watch the video below to see how she celebrated her little boy Jameson’s first birthday.
