Meghan Markle Through the Years: From Actress to Princess-to-Be
Like any civilian-turned-princess, Meghan Markle has undergone quite the royal transformation since announcing her engagement to Prince Harry of Wales. The 36-year-old Los Angeles native first burst on the scene as an actress (she’s best known for her role in Suits) with a laid-back, California-girl style that featured rompers, rhinestone-studded sandals, and big tote bags.
Now that she’s days away from marrying into British royalty — the royal wedding is May 19 — Meghan’s style has evolved dramatically and she’s transformed into a fashion and beauty icon right before our eyes.
But don’t be fooled by Meghan’s rather posh appearance. Sure, beauty and fashion matter to the now-retired actress, but she is the first to admit there’s more to life and to her than simply getting dressed in the morning. “I would hate to think that there is [a glass ceiling for women’s politics],” Meghan told The Aesthete. “Although, often people find it more interesting to talk about women’s fashion than the work that they’re doing in the world.”
What is Meghan doing in the world? Lots. And not all of it has to do with inspiring millions of women’s wardrobes. Prince Harry’s bride-to-be actually became an advocate for the United Nations through the work she was doing in the lifestyle and fashion worlds.
“As well as food, travel, [and] fashion, [The Tig] was really trying to reshape the idea of beauty beyond the physical,” Meghan revealed of her now-defunct website. “I write a lot of think pieces about women’s empowerment or equality and I put them in the beauty category. After I had written a piece on Independence Day about personal independence, I received an email from the Senior Advisor to the Executive Director of UN Women saying that they really liked what I was putting up, what I was using it for, and they wanted to work with me. I didn’t believe it at first!” she added.
