Selma Blair’s service dog: the guest of honor

The Legally Blonde star posted a collection of photos to Instagram on Sunday including shots of herself posing on the carpet upon arriving at the event, holding Scout’s leash as he lay right at her side (and even some where he seemed to be smiling right at the camera!)

“Over 25 years of celebrating the Oscars at Vanity Fair,” Blair wrote in the caption. “I loved tonight, especially. Scout is a solid date.”

The actress also shared posts to her Instagram Stories including slideshows of Scout cuddling up to Chrissy Teigen, Sarah Paulson, Patricia Clarkson, Laverne Cox and Justin Theroux.

“He misses all his new friends already,” Blair wrote of Scout after they left the event.

How Scout helps Blair manage her health

Scout has more responsibility than your average furry companion. He’s a certified service dog trained to assist Blair through her multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease of the central nervous system that damages the protective sheath around nerves which can cause symptoms like muscle weakness, numbness and vision changes.

The Cruel Intentions star was diagnosed with MS in 2018 and has experienced significant ups and downs over the years.

Scout offers physical assistance when needed

In 2022, Blair spoke with PEOPLE about how Scout had changed her life, explaining that being a single mom and living with a condition like MS made her realize how imperative it was that she embrace support from her community.

It was her neurologist who recommended she consider a service dog for the potential physical and emotional benefits, Blair told the publication, admitting that it was a big commitment to bring a dog home (at the time, Scout wasn’t even two years old yet).

“But he’s a tremendous gift,” she gushed about Scout. “He’s with me all the time. If I fall into a big [muscle] spasm or have some trouble moving and need to recalibrate, he can get between my legs, help me get up, and balance me. It’s given me a lot of independence.”

Scout is more than a service dog—he’s family

Blair added that Scout “kept me moving and helped me build stamina,” and that the pup’s presence was also a comfort for Blair’s son, Arthur, who she shares with ex Jason Bleick.

“My son, when he goes to his dad’s, he loves knowing Scout is by my side,” she said. “And I didn’t realize he had concerns about my mobility or safety.”

Blair on her health and next chapter

In a recent interview with First For Women, Blair told us she’s currently feeling well and excited about her future, adding that Scout deserves some credit for helping her regain her strength.

“I’m just really hopeful, and now that I’m really building stamina and I have my dog and my son’s older—things are always changing and to be able to go with the flow of it and to be able to learn from the things you might have been too sleepy to pick up before—you know, I’m always a beginner and I come to things with a beginner’s mind and to always keep options open and think outside the box,” she shared.
