Kristin Cavallari Opens Up About Athlete She Dated: ‘One of the Deeper Relationships I’ve Had’
What Cavallari has said about the ‘relationship’ the couple had and why she decided to end it
Kristin Cavallari is finally opening up about the relationship she has called “one of the deeper relationships” she’s had with a former athlete. While initially not sharing the name of the man she was involved with, she has now decided to tell more.
On the April 1 episode of her podcast, Let’s Be Honest, Cavallari shared that the name of the man she was dating was retired athlete Nate Thompson.
“I really think he’s such a great guy. So that’s not one where I’m like, I don’t want anyone to know,” Cavallari shared. She also called the relationship “the most honest, pure, amazing, quote-unquote relationship I’ve ever had.”
Cavallari shares about their connection
Although Cavallari has kept quiet about the connection until recently, she has now shared the relationship was a deeper one.
“He is an ex-hockey player,” she shared. “He’s been retired for a couple years now. He’s a dad. He’s someone who has done a lot of work on himself, and we really connected on such a deep level. Honestly, one of the deeper relationships I’ve had, especially in such a short amount of time.”
“We didn’t hold back anything. We told each other f—ing everything,” Cavallari added. She also explained that she “wouldn’t consider him a boyfriend” but “someone that I’ve dated.” But despite their closeness, Cavallari decided to end the relationship.
Why Cavallari ended the relationship

It may seem strange for the actress to call it quits with Thompson after hearing how close the two were, but Cavallari explained her stance on the situation. Aside from them being a “mostly long distance” couple, there were a few other factors that played into her decision to end it.
“It wasn’t like we didn’t have fun, and I was attracted to him. Like, all the pieces were there… I just didn’t wanna be in a relationship.”
Cavallari has dated some big stars in the past, from her Laguna Beach co-star Stephen Colletti to her marriage with Jay Cutler. But as a very busy mother of three, Cavallari knew she wasn’t in a place for a relationship.
“I didn’t necessarily have time either,” she explained. “I think that’s also been kind of a factor for me of, like, my time that I can give to a man right now is so limited. And that’s obviously really hard for guys, and it’s hard for me too … It’s f—ing complicated, alright, with having my kids most of the time.”
Cavallari also explained that she wants to focus more on planning her Let’s Be Honest tour, which began on March 7, 2025.
“I was like, I don’t want any distractions before my tour,” she shared. “And I really stuck to that. I really was serious. I did not put any energy into men. I did not talk to any men.”
