Judy Garland Was the Bombshell Hollywood Ignored — Here Are 12 Photos That Prove It
Being a woman is hard, but being a woman in Hollywood? That’s a totally different ball game. But fierce actresses like Judy Garland, despite people trying to hold her back, managed to climb to the top of the ladder, master her craft, and generate success that is unparalleled in the history of the industry. And with us all listening to her holiday song, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” we thought we’d take a nostalgic look back at her career.
Judy Garland was born Frances Ethel Gum on June 22, 1922, in Grand Rapids, MN. With two parents involved in Vaudeville theater, she and her sisters, Mary Jane “Suzy/Suzanne” and Dorothy Virginia “Jimmie,” were exposed to the arts from a young age. The influences of the entertainment industry shaped them into the adults they became.
Judy was always one for the spotlight — she got her first taste at the ripe age of two-and-a-half singing Jingle Bells for a Christmas show at her parent’s theater. The Gumm sisters performed together, dancing and acting until eventually, the trio broke apart. Judy, however, was just getting started.
From the time she was young, Judy was one of the most persistent, driven, and successful actresses around. And while she may not have fit into the stereotype of beauty at the time, these photos prove just how stunning she really was.
