Jenna Bush Hager Reveals Uncomfortable Family Secret
During a recent taping of the Today show, Jenna Bush Hager made a surprising revelation about her grandmother, former First Lady Barabara Bush, that shocked even her co-hosts.
Jenna Bush Hager and her co-anchor Kathie Lee Gifford were discussing whether or not they wear shoes inside the house when the 35-year-old revealed on-air that her 91-year-old grandmother only has four toes on each foot.
As soon as Jenna let that slip, some giggles can be heard from the audience. A wide-eyed Kathie Lee immediately turns to Jenna and asks her, “Has she ever divulged that?” The 35-year-old quickly explains, “But she has darling feet,” most likely in response to Kathie Lee’s question of whether or not it’s appropriate to remove your shoes at someone’s house if you have “gnarly,” dirty feet.
When Kathie Lee asks which toe Barbara Bush is missing, Jenna responds, “I think it’s the second [toes]. Ganny (referring to her grandmother), I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said it. But it happened with age!” Perhaps a little flustered as she realizes what she’s just said, Jenna looks embarrassed and a little red.
Kathie Lee keeps digging for information, asking Jenna what happened to her grandmother’s toes. Trying to keep the mood light, Jenna says, “They say if you don’t sleep that much your toes go away,” Jenna answered, laughing. “I feel terrible now. Should I be embarrassed?” she followed up.
No word yet on how Grandma Barbara felt about her granddaughter revealing such a personal secret. In a statement, Jenna said, “Today, I spoke about my hilarious, strong, loving grandma’s feet. She is indeed missing a toe or two. At an older age, she had a condition commonly known as hammer toes — toes that are too close together and crowd each other out. We don’t talk about them often because it is mainly her kind heart and witty mind that we focus on!”
Whether or not you found Jenna’s comments funny or a bit inappropriate for live television, there’s no doubt that wearing shoes inside the house is still a hotly debated issue.
