Jenna Bush Hager Reveals Secret She Told Her Daughters
As if we didn’t love Jenna Bush Hager enough already, the TODAY host goes and writes this incredibly inspiring open letter to her daughters. And we can’t thank her enough for publicly sharing an important reminder girls need to hear these days—who you are is more important than how you look.
Of course, many of us learn this lesson from day one. But when you’re surrounded by images of picture-perfect women in mainstream media, it’s easy to forget that it’s not reality for most women—sometimes not even for the women being photographed! And even if it was, that’s far from being the only thing that counts in the long run. So it never hurts to remind ourselves of that—but now Jenna Bush Hager has us wanting to remind the special little girls in our lives of that, too.
The mom of two opened her letter on a sweet note, telling her daughters she’s never seen anyone more beautiful than them.
“It is the way you look—your blue eyes (that I longed for as a girl) and your golden hair—but more than that, it is YOU! I see all of you: your kindness, your exuberance, your creativity and, yes, your rambunctious humor,” she wrote.
Too sweet! But then, her note quickly took a turn to warn them about what may be in their future.
“But, my darling girls, that purity and light I see in your eyes could one day be shattered by our world,” she wrote. “You will see images on TV and in movies and magazines to which you will inevitably compare yourself. And you will feel that you come up short. I know that I did.”
Jenna Bush Hager then recalled her own awkward moments of adolescence, including wearing braces and being one of the tallest girls in class, and experiencing the heartbreaking moment a boy broke up with her after a swim date.
She acknowledged that she did not always like what she saw when she looked in the mirror. But luckily, she had her parents by her side to guide and support her during those tough times.
“My parents—your Jefe and Grammee—told me that I was smart and kind and pretty. They told me that I was enough,” she said. “They taught me that who I am is more important than how I look.”
But she warned her precious girls as they got older, they may have the same struggle she did of not always loving what they see in the mirror.
“But if Daddy and I do our jobs, you will look in the mirror and always like who you see. And that, my babes, is far more important,” she wrote.
Aww! To seal it off perfectly, she ended on this sweet note.
“So, my precious babes, always, always know that just by being authentically you, you are more than enough,” she wrote. “And my hope is that one day, when you stand judging yourself in front of a mirror, you can see yourself the way I that I see you.”
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!
