Joseph and Rose Kennedy started a dynasty that would produce some of the most well-known American politicians. They are pictured here with their nine children.

Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., (1888-1969)

The patriarch of the Kennedy family, Joseph Sr. was born in Boston, MA. He was descended from Irish immigrants escaping the potato famine. His father, Patrick Joseph, was a local politician and figure in the Democratic Party. 

Rose Kennedy (1890-1995)

Born Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald in 1890, she also descended from Irish immigrants. Rose's family was very active in local politics, and her father, John Francis, was mayor of Boston. 

On October 7, 1914, Rose Fitzgerald and Joseph Kennedy married. They had nine children, 31 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Devout Catholics, they remained married until 1969 when Joseph Sr. passed away from complications after a stroke. 

Joseph Patrick "Joe" Kennedy Jr. (1915–1944)

The oldest child of Rose and Joseph Kennedy Sr., Joe Jr. was a lieutenant in the United States Navy. Sadly, he was killed in action during a mission in 1944. He never married or had kids. 

John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy (1917–1963)

Perhaps the most well-known Kennedy, JFK was the 35th President of the United States. He was assassinated in 1963 by Lee Harvey Oswald.

Jacqueline Lee "Jackie" Kennedy Onassis (1929–1994)

• Married to: John F. Kennedy
• Children: Arabella, Caroline, JFK Jr., and Patrick

Jackie Kennedy married JFK on September 12, 1953, and the couple had 4 children together. Sadly, Arabella was a stillbirth and Patrick died two days after he was born. After JFK was assassinated, she remarried Aristotle Onassis in 1968.

Caroline Bouvier Kennedy (1957-Present)

• Married to: Edwin Schlossberg
• Children: Rose, Tatiana, and Jack 

Caroline Kennedy was almost six years old when her father was shot and killed. She is the only surviving child of John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy. In 1986, she married exhibit designer Edwin Schlossberg, and they have three children.

Rose Schlossberg is the first-born grandchild of John F. Kennedy. She graduated from Harvard in 2010.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy Jr. (1960-1999)

JFK Jr. was only two when his father was killed. In 1996, he married Carolyn Bessette. Just a few years later, the couple and Bessette's older sister were tragically killed when their plane crashed in the Atlantic Ocean. JFK Jr. and his wife never had kids. 

Rose Marie "Rosemary" Kennedy (1918-2005)

• Daughter of: Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy

Rosemary was the oldest daughter born to Joseph Sr. and Rose Kennedy. After a lobotomy in 1941 to fix behavioral problems, she spent the rest of her life in an institution in Wisconsin. She never married or had kids. 

Kathleen Agnes "Kick" Kennedy Cavendish, Marchioness of Hartington (1920-1948)

• Married to: William John Robert "Billy" Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington

Kick worked with the Red Cross in England where she met her husband, William Cavendish (pictured). Against objections from her mother, the two married in 1944. Sadly, William was killed by a sniper four months later. In 1948, Kick and her partner Earl Fitzwilliam died in a plane crash in France. 

Dame Eunice Mary Kennedy Shriver (1921-2009)

• Married to: Robert Sargent "Sarge" Shriver, Jr.
• Children: Bobby, Maria, Timothy, Mark, and Anthony 

Eunice Kennedy Shriver was known for her lifelong advocacy for children's health and disability groups. In 2006, Pope Benedict XVI granted her papal knighthood. 

In 1953, she married Sargent Shriver, and they had 19 grandchildren, the second-most of any of her siblings. She passed away in 2009 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, MA. 

Robert Sargent "Bobby" Shriver III (1954-Present)

Bobby Shriver graduated from Yale in 1981. He married Malissa Feruzzi in 2005, and they have two daughters: Natasha (Malissa's daughter from a previous relationship) and Rosemary. He currently works as an attorney, writer and activist.

Maria Owings Shriver (1955-Present)

Maria Shriver graduated from Georgetown in 1977. That year, Tom Brokaw introduced her to Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the two married in 1986. In 2011, they announced their separation. She currently works for NBC News as a special correspondent.

In 2015, Jack graduated from Yale. His mother, Caroline Kennedy, is the current U.S. Ambassador to Japan, and he has been living there for the past year. He is set to attend Harvard Law School. 

Timothy Perry Shriver (1959-Present)

Timothy graduated from Yale in 1981. In 1986 he married Linda Potter, and they have five kids. He currently serves as the chairman of the Special Olympics.

Tatiana Schlossberg graduated from Yale in 2012. She also holds a Master's degree in history from the University of Oxford. She currently works at the New York Times.

Robert Francis Kennedy Jr. (1954-Present)

The third child of Robert and Ethel Kennedy, Bobby Jr. is a former New York senator and the 64th U.S. Attorney General. He now works as a radio host and an environmental activist. He has six children with his first two wives and none with his current wife. 

Bobby Jr. has been married three times. His first marriage was to Emily Ruth Black. The couple wed in 1982, and they have two children: Robert Kennedy III and Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy.

After graduating from Brown, Bobby Kennedy III directed a musical called ELEW: Live from Infinity. In 2013, he starred in the movie AmeriQua, which also featured Alec Baldwin.

Kick graduated from Stanford in 2010. She currently works at the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization in D.C.

Mary Richardson Kennedy was Bobby Kennedy Jr.'s second wife. They were married from 1994 to 2012 when Mary passed away. They have four children together: Conor, Kyra, Finn, and Aiden.

Conor Kennedy is currently a student at Harvard. He made headlines a few years ago when he dated singer Taylor Swift.

David Anthony Kennedy (1955-1984)

David was 12 when his father was shot and killed. In 1973, David, his girlfriend and his older brother, Joseph, were in a car accident. As a result, David developed an addiction to painkillers and died from an overdose in 1984. He never married or had kids.

Mary Courtney Kennedy-Hill (1956-Present)

Mary goes by her middle name, Courtney. She is the fifth of Robert and Ethel's 11 children. In 1980, she married ABC sports producer Jeff Ruhe. The couple divorced in 1990. Three years later she married Paul Michael Hill, but the couple separated in 2006. 

Paul and Courtney have one daughter, Saoirse, who was born in 1997.

Kerry Kennedy is the president of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization. She was married to ex-New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. They have three daughters together.
