If You See These Patches Under Your Armpits, You May Want to Schedule an Appointment with the Doctor STAT
Some serious illnesses like cancer or diabetes manifest themselves in totally unexpected ways. For example, sometimes the way the skin puckers on your breast can be a sign of breast cancer. So can inverted nipples. These physical signs are rare, but they do happen.
Skin conditions can also be an early warning sign of diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. They’re caused by high amounts of insulin in the blood, which in turn triggers changes in the skin cells. One, called acanthosis nigricans, is especially common. The skin around your armpits, neck, and groin, can turn tan or brown, and are dry and itchy. Another telltale skin condition is diabetic dermopathy. That’s when people develop light brown, scaly patches on the front of their legs that look like age spots. They usually don’t itch or hurt.
If you notice changes to your skin, schedule an appointment with your doctor. The M.D. will be able to determine if they’re harmless–or signs that you’re developing type 2 diabetes.
