Female users weigh in on online discourse around how to improve your style without stretching your wallet
The average American woman spends over $800 annually to maintain her appearance. From manicures to makeup to clothing, beauty isn’t just painful, it’s expensive too! A recently published Reddit thread titled “How to spice up my appearance without actually purchasing anything!” included dozens of women sharing tips on how they enhance their beauty without breaking the bank, and their advice is money-saving magic!.

Some of the thread’s most popular advice was related to clothes and fashion.
As the typical American purchases 53 new clothing items each year, some users recommended ways in which they keep their closet feeling fresh without new additions.
“Take everything out of your closet and put together new outfits. We all tend to wear the same thing over and over even when we have lots of options. Getting it all out in front of your eyes really reminds you what you have,” said one user.
Another user weighed suggesting that using the internet is key to fueling wardrobe creativity:
“[There are] ideas on just wearing clothing differently, like wearing shirts backwards etc,” said one writer. “Try different things when you are not in a rush to go somewhere. Have fun with it! Otherwise, accessorize boldly!”
Reddit money-saving tips on skincare
Other users in the thread focused on DIY skincare tips that save them money.
“Exercise is such a natural skincare,” wrote one user. “When I don’t work out, I get pimples easily, but when I do, my skin clears up pretty good.”
Some studies even indicate that exercise can have anti-aging effects on your skin.
Hair removal is one of the pricer beauty routines that women maintain. In fact women’s four-blade razors are priced 66 percent higher than men’s!
A cheap alternative one user recommended is sugar waxing: “Not simple, but very affordable. It’s made from just sugar, water and lemon juice. I have hirsutism so this has been amazing for me,” they said.

When it came to discussing makeup, several users agreed that simplicity was key to keeping costs low and visual interest high.
“My routine is affordable and low maintenance. Just eyebrows, lashes, and undereye concealer/corrector. Products cost me less than $100 a year and I use them every day,” said one user.
Hair refreshes suggested on the thread comprised several interesting DIY techniques.
“Try new hairstyles. Lighten your hair using lemons. I think you can also slightly darken your hair using black tea or coffee,” says one user.
According to one user, bangs are the answer when you’re feeling uninspired by your hair.
“Fringe. I sometimes just cut my fringe when I feel bored of my hair and it always gets positive reactions and new conversations from people,” they said.
