This Makeup Hack Erases Pesky Under-Eye Circles Instantly

Maybe you just didn’t get a good night’s sleep, or perhaps this is something you deal with regularly, but chances are you’ve woken up to dark under-eye circles on more than one occasion and felt like your usual makeup routine wouldn’t cut it.

Luckily, there’s a very easy — albeit slightly unorthodox — makeup hack to fix the appearance of under-eye circles that’s currently going viral on TikTok. All you need are your normal foundation products (such as concealer, foundation, and powder) and a tube of red lipstick.

Yes, you heard that right: Red lipstick.

This trick really couldn’t be any simpler: Take your tube of lipstick (the creamier, the better!) and stipple a small amount of it under the eye and up the side. Then, pat to blend it in. Keep in mind that with this particular makeup hack, less is more. It’s easier to start with a smaller amount of red lipstick and layer more on as you experiment. Just be careful not to rub your eyes too much in the process of putting on the lipstick; you don’t want to stretch out the delicate skin there.

Once that’s done, apply the rest of your concealer, foundation, and powder routine as you normally would. One person who tried out this hack, an In the Know video producer named Lisa Azcona, also recommended using a creamy concealer in a neutral shade for easier application and blending.

Why does bright red lipstick work so well when you’d think it’d make a complete mess of your makeup? It all comes down to the basics of color theory. People often have cooler green, blue, or purple undertones that appear when they have under-eye circles. Because traditional concealers and foundations are usually matte, the pop of red adds more depth.

There are plenty of remedies out there for longer-term under-eye care, but if you just need a quick fix to get through the day, this one definitely does the trick.
