This Concealer Trick for Mature Skin Covers Dark Circles Without Highlighting Fine Lines
Applying makeup to aging skin can be frustrating, to say the least. Things like covering up dark circles can end up making you feel worse when it increases the look of fine lines. Luckily, it’s possible to nix both of those issues with a few simple tweaks to your concealer technique.
Kate Talbert, a makeup artist who shares her favorite tricks and tips for people over 30 on her blog and Instagram page, explains in a video, “If you have more mature skin, then you do need to change the way that you apply your concealer. The first step is to not apply concealer directly in the under eye area.”
That might seem counterintuitive, but a little adjustment to your concealer placement can make a huge difference. “When you put concealer right [under the eye], it’s going to grab onto every fine line and crease,” Talbot says. “So we put it up where the skin is a little bit thicker and it’s going to be much less likely to crease.”
After applying concealer to the outer corner of the eye and in the inner corner along the side of your nose, Talbot recommends buffing it with a small brush rather than your fingers or a sponge. “This is going to help that product to really melt into the skin and not be as likely to get caught in all the fine lines.” She uses one similar to the e.l.f. Along with the strategic concealer placement, we love Talbot’s tip for applying setting spray to the back of your hand and then gently patting it under the eye. “This is going to help it stop creasing before it even gets the chance to,” she promises.
If you need some extra help kicking dark circles to the curb, you can try using a little bit of red lipstick under your eyes before the concealer to balance things out. It sounds wild, but it works!
