Plus, the exact shade formulas to ask for
It’s officially spring: the weather is warming up, flowers are blooming and we’re swapping out sweaters for sundresses. But what’s a seasonal transition without changing up your hair color?! While for fall and winter we might gravitate toward darker, moodier shades, for spring and summer, it’s all about the highlights and adding in brightness. And since different hair colors are always rotating through the trend cycle, we got insights from celebrity hairstylists on what this year’s “it” spring hair colors are. Keep reading for inspiration for your next look, whether you’re getting it done at the salon or recreating at home.
What hair colors are trending for spring?
We’re a long way from the world where there was just blonde, brunette, ginger, etc. We now have so many different subcategories under each of the main hair colors, such as cherry cola red, latte brunette and lived-in blonde. The options seem to be endless when it comes to hair color, and there are so many hues that have fun, trendy names that are going viral on social media.
However, with that said, it’s totally understandable (and probably inevitable) to be overwhelmed with all the color trends and what’s considered “in” and “out.” That’s why we talked to celebrity hairstylists for their expert insights on what the top spring hair colors are this year. Here, the shades you’re sure to see this season.
Spring hair colors: Toffee bronde

Warm brunette, like Halle Berry has above, is huge for spring and is a great way to warm up your complexion without feeling like you need to go full blonde. To DIY this look at home, celebrity hairstylists Tia Lambourn and Alexis Thurston say to create highlights in foils using Danger Jones Powder Lightener and 5 Volume Developer, while simultaneously using Gloss Toner with Bonder shades 6-34 + 7-8 as a lowlight. To finish up the color, use Gloss Toner with Bonder 5-8 + 6-0 as the root shadow, then 10-03 and 0-0 (Clear) to tone the highlights.
If you’re headed to the salon, Lambourn and Thurston say to ask for “rich lowlights with shadowed roots and warmth throughout, with pops of bright natural blonde.”
Spring hair colors: Buttercream blonde

Golden blonde hues are all the rage at the moment, creating more of that “lived in” blonde look that requires less maintenance and upkeep. For spring, we specifically love buttercream blonde, worn by celebs such as Reese Witherspoon. “This is a creamy, warm blonde with soft golden tones and a buttery finish,” says celebrity hairstylist Laurie Heaps.
Ask your stylist to use Redken shade EQ 09NB (Irish Crème), which is a soft, neutral blonde with a touch of warmth that will make for a rich, creamy base, and Redken shade EQ 09G (Vanilla Cream), which creates golden, buttery highlights that amplify the warmth and makes hair glow, says Heaps.
Spring hair colors: Sandy brown

For the brunettes, try out a sandy brown for spring, which adds visual dimension to hair. Lambourn achieved this look by using Danger Jones Powder Lightener and 10 and 20 Volume Developer to lift and create highlights. Then, with Danger Jones Gloss Toner with Bonder, she mixed 4-0, 5-0 and 5-8 as a lowlight, and finished it off by using 5-0 and 3-8 for the root tap and 10-01, 10-03 & 0-0 (Clear) for the all-over tone.
You can ask your stylist for an “Ashy blonde balayage with lowlights and cooler contrast,” says Lambourn.
Spring hair colors: Mushroom blonde

If you prefer a cool-toned blonde, try mushroom blonde for spring, which is “A perfect neutral, low-maintenance blonde that grows out beautifully,” says Heaps. “Cool, earthy tones soften features and look sophisticated without harsh upkeep.” Celebrities like Margot Robbie (above) have worn the mushroom blonde hue, which gives hair added depth.
Ask your stylist to use Redken shade EQ O9V (Platinum Ice), which creates the cool, ashy blonde, and shade EQ 08N (Mojave) for that neutral, earthy base that will balance out the cool tones and make it look more lived-in, recommends Heaps.
Spring hair colors: Icy honey blonde

We always love a good ol’ balayage. Hairstylist Chrissy Danielle created this look by using Danger Jones Powder Lightener + 10 Volume Developer. This blonde look is the perfect balance between cool and warm, hence why it’s called “icy honey.”
Danielle says to ask your stylist for “Dimension with contrasting blonde balayage and warmth.”
Spring hair colors: Cool espresso

You don’t have to add highlights or warmth to participate in spring hair color trends. “People are leaning into healthier-looking hair, and deep, glossy brunettes radiate shine,” says Heaps. Try out a cool espresso hair color this season, perfect for those wanting to go darker or are already brunette.
Heaps says the recipe for this color uses Redken shade EQ O3N (Espresso), a deep, neutral brown base, and shade EQ O4NA (Storm Cloud), which creates the cool undertones and the “perfect espresso balance, making the hair sleek and dimensional.”
