From Reddit to your bathroom: Here’s how to easily trim bangs at home, whatever your style
Getting bangs is a fun way to refresh your style. However, when they start growing out, they can become more of a hassle. Luckily, a recent viral Reddit video shows you how to easily trim your bangs at home. Keep scrolling to learn these DIY bang trimming techniques!
How to cut your own bangs
In the viral Reddit video, a woman with bright pink, short bangs shows how hairstylist Wayne Tuggle recommends cutting bangs at home. He explains his method for getting them back in tip-top shape.
First, Tuggle pulls the bands back using a comb, holding them up with two fingers. Then, he suggests placing your fingers lower down the hair—whatever isn’t covered by your fingers is what you shoud trim. Once you’ve made the cut, release yourthe hair, and you will be good to go.

How to cut other types of bangs
Since the bangs in the video are very short, Tuggle’s method might not suit your style. That’s why we’ve rounded up other viral tips for cutting bangs at home based on your specific bang style.
How to cut curtain bangs at home
Curtain bangs tend to be longer and sweep to the side, so cutting them as Tuggle does probably isn’t the best option. Thankfully, Katerin Stephenson shares her technique for trimming curtain bangs right from her bathroom.
To start, Stephenson separates her bangs, sprays them down and styles them normally. Then she brushes through the hair with a comb before taking her scissors and trimming the hair ever so slightly, starting in the middle and slowly extending it to the sides. Just be sure not to cut your bangs too short, and make sure you don’t accidentally stab yourself in the eye.

How to trim side bangs
Similar to curtain bangs, side bangs tend to be styled either to the left or the right, making Tuggle’s straight-across method not a viable solution for people with this bang type. Instead, TikToker Melissa Cunnigham found a method that works just as well.
Cunningham begins by combing her bangs forward. She then twists them together and trims off the ends. This method works best on dry, styled hair, so you can see the final result right away.

@themelissacunningham I feel like I’m always trimming my bangs… I wear my bangs longer so I can sweep them to the side or keep them straight, so they’re always needing a little snippy snip✂️✂️ Here’s how I trim mine! How to trim wispy bangs
It turns out cutting long, wispy bangs isn’t that much different than Tuggle’s method for cutting short hard ones.
In a viral TikTok video, Briana Bappert demonstrates how she sections out her bangs, sprays them, blow-dries, and then trims off the desired length.

When trying any of these methods, hairstylist and salon owner Shannon Rodgers advises against pulling your hair too tight, “or tipping your head down. This is natural to do, but the bangs will come out way too short! Less is more with bangs as they pop up quite easily.”
She also says, “Eyebrow scissors work best so you have to take a little off at a time, cut your bangs dry and make sure to hang natural and cut a little off at a time.”
